To successfully engage in research and education in data science and data-driven research activities across the College, and externally, the Data Science Institute is supported by a defined governance structure. The Research Board determines and reviews the strategic direction of the Institute, supported by predominantly external guidance from the Advisory Board.

The Research Board is formed of senior and active stakeholders of data science related research representative of the faculties of Engineering, Medicine, and Natural Sciences, and Imperial Business School. It's purpose is to set strategy and oversee strategic implementation to fulfil the objectives of the Institute, in particular to enhance communication between the Institute and the College. The Research Board is chaired by Professor David Hand, OBE.

The Advisory Board comprises senior figures from the field of data science, drawn externally from both industry and academia. The board provides external guidance and advice relating to the strategic direction of the Institute. The Advisory Board is currently chaired by Mr Larry Hirst, CBE, a former director of IBM (EMEA) and is currently a non-executive director of ARM Holdings Ltd. and MITIE Group PLC.
