IROP- International Research Opportunities Programme

Spend this summer doing data science research at MIT! 

IROP is a summer exchange programme offered jointly by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Imperial College London. Imperial undergraduate students spend eight weeks working on a research project under the supervision of faculty members at MIT. 

Partners at MIT: Media Lab, the Computer Science and Artificial Intellifence Laboratory, and the Institute for Data, Systems and Society

Partners at Imperial: Department of Computing and Data Science Institute

Imperial Faculty Supervisor: Dr. Yves-Alexandre de Montjoye

Eligibility:

  • 2nd year students in the Department of Computing 
  • Students will normally be considered only if on-track for a first class degree

2017 Placement Dates

Arrival Date: Sunday 2 July

Placement Begins: Monday 3 July

Departure Date: Saturday 26 August

In order to be eligible for the programme participants must be able to undertake the placement according to the dates aboVe. No charges to these dates are permitted.

 

Bursary

Selected students wiill receive a bursury co-funded by the International Relations Office and their academic department. The bursary is expected to cover all necessary costs of undertaking placement (flights, accommodation, food, visa (if applicable), health insurance and local travel). Students are responsible for funding extra costs such as social events or further travel. The exact bursury amount wil be confirmed to selected students in April 2017. The exact bursury amount will be between £4000 and $4600. 

Application Process

All application documents should be combined in one single PDF file titled "LAST NAME, MITIROP" in the order stated below and submitted to Laura Bulmer by 9:00 GMT on Thursday 23 February 2017

  1. CV
  2. A copy of your Imperial Collge academic transcript (students can request this from Student Hub)
  3. Statement of motivation (maximum 1/2 page A4) to include:

                        a) Why would you be a good candidate for the opportunity?

                        b) Which specific data science research area are you interested and why?

The Deadline for applications is 9:00 GMT on Thursday 23 February 2017

Applications wil be reviewed by the department and shortlisted candidates will be invited for a short interview to be held at the end of Feb/early March.

Applicants can expect to hear whether they have been shortlisted for interview by Tuesday 28 February 2017
