Metals and minerals

We explore all things metals, minerals and mining, with a focus on sustainability

We investigate how best to source, produce, extract and use the Earth's resources to support our growing global population, and seek new and improved routes towards sustainable, renewable forms of energy production and storage.

We focus on how best to extract Earth's resources with minimal environmental impact and, among other topics:

  • study how fluid flows and moves through the subsurface;
  • characterise reservoirs and industrial-scale energy and environmental systems;
  • explore renewable and nuclear energy systems in collaboration with the Department's Energy research;
  • and are assessing how the field of petroleum geoscience and engineering will evolve in coming years as we target sustainable technologies to support the energy transition.
