Louise Alter

Having completed her studies at an International School in Paris, Louise entered ETHZ (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich) where she undertook a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering. After which, she strengthened her knowledge through an internship in a major engineering consultancy in London where she worked on drainage strategies and renewable energy implementations as part of climate change mitigation and adaptation strategy of the city of London.
Her desire to be involved in the global challenge of moving towards a more sustainable future was confirmed through her participation in the Climate-KIC summer school, where she worked in a multidisciplinary team to develop a clean tech start-up. This lead to her joining the MSc Sustainable Energy Futures to enhance her engineering education and to acquire an understanding of the business and policy of the energy industry.

Nicolás Beltran

I have always been fascinated by nature and concerned about how we are destroying it. Working in solving climate change became my goal, and I pursued degrees in mechanical and industrial engineering to achieve this. After graduating in 2011, I spent a year as a financial risk management consultant before creating my own startup (vertinvertical.com), focused on creating sustainable architecture projects to make our modern life style respectful of nature. In the process, with my business partners, we launched an ecosystem for environmental and social entrepreneurs to scale up, connect with others and make an impact through their work (www.tierrafir.me). Both have been running for five and two years respectively.

I chosebthe MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures in order to acquire the tools to become an expert and leader in the energy sector. My studies at Imperial College London have given me the opportunity to build a network and to enrich my view of the challenges we face and the solutions we can create to solve them. I wish to contribute significantly to the transformation of the energy systems into clean and renewable sources. I will do this from platforms in business and academia.

Zulkeefal Dar

zulBiography
I received my BE in Mechanical Engineering from NUST, Pakistan. I went on to work in the fertilizer sector as project engineer. My job description included engineering the design of stationary mechanical equipment as well as working on projects to improve plant performance. I later conducted research on the feasibility of making vertical axis wind turbines out of abandoned helicopters’ tail rotors while also freelancing, which mainly involved modelling and stress analysis of mechanical systems.

My first professional experience peaked my interest in the energy sector. Seeing how baldy industry and the national economy were being affected by energy insufficiency, I decided to pursue a career in the energy field. I was mainly interested in wind turbines. However, Pakistan has huge potential for other renewables as well, and it needs to make the best of all sources to meet its energy needs and ensure sustainably. I chose the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures because it not only covers the technical but also the political framework to apply the energy solutions in an actual socio-economic scenario. After completion of my course, I plan to work in the renewable energy sector in Pakistan with government and other private stakeholders.

Sara studied Physics at Imperial College London with a year abroad at the University of Valencia. In Valencia, she completed her thesis on active machine learning for the Earth Explorer Fluorescence Explorer mission, which seeks to improve our understanding of the global carbon and water cycles. After the completion of her first degree, Sara worked in the oil and gas industry for a year. Realising that her career interest lay within renewable energy and sustainable development, Sara joined the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures course.

Florian Deveza

After intensive training in mathematics, physics and chemistry in the French “Classes Preparatoires aux Grandes Ecoles,” I entered Supelec engineering school in 2014. At the end of the first two years, during which I have studied Electrical Engineering, I completed an internship at the New Caledonian Utility Company where I studied and designed a hybrid system consisting of a floating photovoltaic plant linked with a pumped hydroelectric energy storage. I then decided to focus on renewable energies and joined the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures to improve my technical knowledge of low carbon technologies and to learn about energy policy and economics.

Yifu Ding

Yifu obtained electrical and electronics engineering degrees from North China Electrical Power University (NCEPU) and the University of Edinburgh. In 2015, she won an innovative competition held by ABB and was invited to a tour in the main laboratory, where she was inspired by the great potential of renewable energy resources and different solutions for low-carbon grids in China. She subsequently decided to explore the energy sector at the Imperial College London in 2016.

Loukas Douvaras

I have always been an energy enthusiast and therefore enrolled in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh). During the last two years of my studies, I followed the energy pathway where I learned how to deal with techno-economic energy issues. My degree thesis, entitled “Fault diagnostic and clearing in low power wind systems connected to the electric grid,” gave me the opportunity to investigate the dynamic behaviour of a complete wind turbine system and its interaction with the grid using Matlab Simulink.  

Climate change is a reality, and I strongly believe that sustainability is the key to reversing it. I chose the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures at Imperial College London in order to learn more about sustainable energy technologies and considering the economics, the policy, the environment and contemporary global matters.

Firra Gumilar

During her undergraduate studies in chemical engineering, Firra worked on a project to introduce and build a biogas system for a remote village. She soon realised during the project that more than an engineering skill is needed to successfully apply an engineering solution in the real world. This led her to pursue the MSc of SEF at Imperial College London. This multidisciplinary degree in energy complements her engineering degree and has expanded her views of the energy sector. It has also strengthened her interest in energy policy and business for her future career.

With a scholarship from the Indonesian government, she intends to focus her research on implementing sustainable energy transitions in Indonesia with the goal of impacting Southeast Asia more broadly

Amanda Kahunzire

amandaBiography
After completing a BSc in Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, I went on to work for Uganda’s largest electricity distribution utility for two years. Uganda’s electricity industry is predominantly hinged on centralised hydro generation, and to-date over 80% of Uganda’s population (mainly in rural areas) continues to lack access to electricity. The unique situation in Uganda, and many sub-saharan African countries, calls for new approaches to the electrification problem, with particular focus on affordable off-grid solutions in addition to a diverse centralized generation portfolio. These challenges can be overcome with renewable energy, of which the continent has abundant resource potential.

A recipient of the Chevening FCO scholarship, I chose the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures primarily because of its rich course content and multidisciplinarity. Addressing the challenges of our future energy systems requires a broader appreciation of social, economic, political and environmental synergies in order to develop sustainable solutions. I hope that my time on the course will equip me to be a thought leader in this space in Africa and globally, and I look forward to applying the skills learned this year to coming up with lasting solutions to our growing energy needs.

I was born and raised in Boston and lived my entire life in the United States before I arrived in London for the Sustainable Energy Futures program. My undergraduate studies were completed at Vanderbilt University, where I graduated with a Bachelors in Civil Engineering and Economics and a minor in Engineering Management.

Over the course of my undergraduate experience, I’ve held internships in fields ranging from economic modelling and analysis to civil engineering and construction management. This diverse work experience, combined with my broad educational background, has instilled in me an interdisciplinary curiosity that fits perfectly with the complex nature of the today’s energy sector.

I have been passionate about the field of sustainable energy since high school and wanted to continue my education by pursuing an MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures. Participation in this program has allowed me to further develop my knowledge base, technical skill set and business acumen for application towards solving the world's energy problems. Motivated by the duality of challenge and purpose, I am hoping to parlay the knowledge that I have accrued throughout my studies into an impactful career within the field of energy strategy.

After studying intensively for two years to prepare for the entrance examinations to the French top-ranking establishments, I entered Centrale Lyon, a general engineering school and studied a range of engineering fields.

I then took a gap year in order to gain professional experience. I completed internships at two French companies. In one, I provided support to a smart grid team, and the second was related to the optimisation of hydropower generation. I particularly loved tackling challenging problems.

I chose the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures because I truly think the major issues that we will have to solve in this century will be related to sustainable energy generation.

Niovi Papanikolaou

I completed my BSc in Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics and my first MSc degree in Energy, Aeronautics and Environment at the University of Patras, Greece. My diploma dissertation examined the relationship of the flow's angle of attack to the formation of vortex phenomena around the turbine's blade. I have also had two internships within the energy industry: the first at the Hellenic Petroleum and the second at the Hellenic Public Power Corporation where I was involved in the mechanical equipment maintenance team. 

My decision to apply for the MSc Sustainable Energy Futures course was based on my studies and work in mechanical engineering and environmental concerns, particularly climate change. My high career expectations in the energy industry made Imperial College London my first choice.

Throughout my undergraduate studies in Geology, I developed a pro-active nature, as well as a comprehensive knowledge and passion regarding climate change and the energy sector, specifically sustainable solutions for meeting global demand. Consequently, I chose to undertake the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures and have been particularly intrigued by the study of energy financing, policy and markets, specifically, the evolution of energy markets globally in response to the growing demand for renewable energy.

Beyond academia, I have established interpersonal skills and the ability to thrive under pressure working as an F.A. qualified football referee. My enthusiasm to promote involvement in energy led me to co-found Durham University Student Energy Society. My passion for energy also led to internships with two UK oil and gas firms, in which I gained a key insight into upstream petroleum operations and electricity delivery. However, I have realised that my ambition is to pursue a career at the forefront of the energy sector, creating solutions to the challenges ahead.

Ardha Pradikta Rahardjo

After graduating with a degree in electrical engineering from Institute Technology Bandung (ITB), Indonesia, Ardha worked in the oil and gas industries for seven years. However, sustainability has always been his passion. His undergraduate research project involved making a lab-scale prototype for an axial flux permanent magnet generator for wind turbine application. This research won awards at both the national and international level: Rekin Award for National Energy Completion (2009) and 3rd best paper in IEEE - International Conference Power Engineering and Renewable Energy (2012). He believes that the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures at Imperial College London is one of the best ways to improve his knowledge of and experience in the integration of policy, business and technology in sustainable energy sector.

During completion of a BEng Civil Engineering degree at the University of Surrey, I submitted a final year project assessing the opportunity and constraints of using decentralised renewable energy technologies at a future university campus development. I have previous energy consultancy experience, delivering broad energy strategies for major automotive manufacturers, alongside assisting the management team of an emerging energy development company. I completed a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Manchester. I have always had an undeniable interest in energy, a field that has its theory concisely depicted in thermodynamics and discussed widely amongst the modern society due to climate change. Sustainability in energy is now more important than ever as it is the main driver for climate change. However, the industry requires transformation and is inherently uncertain and risky. I decided to pursue the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures not just to widen my knowledge in the energy sector but also to be a part of the change.

Ronald Sukianto

ronBiography
After completing his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia, Ronald began his professional career as a drilling field engineer in Halliburton working in geothermal development fields in Indonesia. His interest in the energy industry began after he chose the energy conversion specialisation during undergraduate studies. This interest was further fostered during his internship at Chevron as a Facility Engineer and through his involvement in the Society of Petroleum Engineers Student Chapter. Motivated by a concern for the environment issue and expected economic growth in Indonesia, Ronald decided to develop his knowledge and perspective of energy by attending the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures course. He is supported by a full scholarship from the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education, Indonesia Ministry of Finance.

Richard received his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto. He had an internship at Ontario Power Generation, and participated in multiple nuclear reactor inspection and maintenance projects at Pickering/Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. Richard joined the MSc Sustainable Energy Futures course to acquire knowledge about economics and policy aspects of implementation of energy technologies and explore solutions for challenges in modern energy systems.

Manyi Wang

Biography
manyiI graduated from Zhejiang University in China with an undergraduate degree in energy and environmental engineering. To continue my career in energy, I chose the MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures. Unlike my undergraduate studies, the course provides a much wider scope of multi-disciplinary modules incorporating economics, policy and global thinking—exactly what I expected from a top ranking institution in the world’s most international and vibrant city. 

For my undergraduate thesis, I conducted an energy behaviour study in a university library and found occupancy prediction so intriguing that I chose this topic for my thesis project here at Imperial College London. The year I have spent on this course has strengthened my belief that sustainability is about responsibility and equality and that it is a cooperative endeavour requiring participation from every part of this planet and benefiting every single human being.
