The Department organises a range of events to celebrate equality and diversity in our department. We have a subgroup within our Equality, Diversity and Culture Committee (EDCC) who organise events to raise awareness of and engage our community with topics relating to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

Below are some examples of previous events we have held or contributed towards.

LGBT History Month celebration, 25 February 2022

We held an informal event to celebrate LGBT History Month, to learn from others, strengthen our community, celebrate LGBTQ+ contributions to engineering and society and to reassert our commitment to our values

This included a series of informal talks including: 

  • Omar Matar (Head of Department): Welcome and introductory remarks
  • João Cabral (EDCC Co-Chair): LGBT+ Visibility and Discretion in Engineering
  • Emmy Kritsanaviparkporn (MSc rep): Overcoming boundaring of gender inequality as a chemical engineer
  • Nilay Shah (History Group Chair): The case(s) for ED&I in engineering
  • Emma Pajak (Departmental rep):  An undergraduate's perspective of ChemEng at Imperial
  • Magda Titirici (Royal Society of Chemistry ED&I): Allyship
  • Salvador Eslava (staff): An academic perspective

 International Women's Day, 8 March 2022

To celebrate International Women's Day we organised a screening of Picture a Scientist,  which chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Following the screening we held a panel discussion covering some of the main themes in the film as well as a general discussion on the topic of women in science. 

This Is Engineering Day 2019

We marked This Is Engineering Day 2019 by interviewing researchers in our department about their work and how they gained an interest in chemical engineering. The playlist can be viewed on our YouTube channel.

Black History Month: Being Black in STEM

In 2020 we marked Black History Month with a series of webinars delivered by undergraduate students in our department. The series, Being Black in STEM: Insights into Higher Education, is aimed at young people and covers topics such as how to choose your A-Levels, the university application process, and how to make the most of your university experience.
