Our departmental values guide our behaviour, underpinning everything we do, and make us the unique, diverse and thriving environment we are.

We strongly value the dedication of the Chemical Engineering community in working together to fulfil our mission and are committed to developing a safe environment of wellbeing and productivity within which Departmental members develop personally and professionally.

Our departmental values, which were decided collectively by members of the department, are:

RespectInnovationIntegrityCollaborationExcellence
Inclusive Creative Ethical Supportive Professional
Embracing diversity Resourceful Trustworthy Engaging Responsible
Tolerant Daring Open-minded Sharing Efficient
Approachable Challenging   Embracing teamwork

With these values in mind, it’s important to be clear that there are behaviours that we do not and will not accept in the department, and we have clear pathways in place both departmentally and across Imperial for reporting and support.

We do not accept microaggressions, bullying or harassment of any kind and are committed to taking the necessary action to eliminate all forms of discrimination – especially direct and indirect forms of harassment, bullying and victimisation, and those based on gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or any other of the protected characteristics outlined in the Equality Act 2010. Read our statement on racism to find out how the department deals with racist abuse, and where you can get support.

We expect all of our staff, students and visiting researchers to adhere to this with no exceptions.

Our culture

We value our staff and make sure we invest in their professional development, arrange opportunities for socialising, and reward them for their hard work and dedication.

Imperial College London has a range of training opportunities on offer which we encourage our staff to take up, alongside secondment and shadowing opportunities and a dedicated careers service.

Each month we hold a staff mixer with food and drink, as well as an annual Christmas Party and Summer BBQ. We encourage staff to take part in student celebrations including welcome events and end of year celebrations and we run special student-staff projects including a social committee and a gardening group.

We also hold a quarterly reward and recognition scheme where staff are encouraged to nominate their colleagues to say thank you for their service and/or contributions to one-off projects.
