Renewable energy, future materials, improved health treatments, and resilient food supply chains are just some of the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The ethos of Imperial’s new Chemistry Building, the Molecular Sciences Research Hub (MSRH), highlights how chemistry might be the solution to these challenges.
This briefing covers the following topics:
- Disruptive technologies
- Grand challenges
- Networked chemistry
- Probable, plausible and possible chemistry futures: looking ahead to 2040
The Chemistry Futures 2040 and launch of the Molecular Sciences Research Hub took place on Friday 12 April 2019. Exploring cutting-edge science in chemistry, presenting provocative visions, technological breakthroughs and the potential discipline evolution, the day comprised of the official opening of the MSRH by Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, followed by an exploration of the future of chemistry by means of presentations based on the research from Imperial College London’s expert academics, interactive discussions and specialist industry workshops. These discussed how disruptive technologies, a focus on the world’s big challenges and an interdisciplinary mindset across science and business will be integral to chemistry in 2040.
