Introduction video

Why should I get involved?

As of 2022, 63 early career researchers have benefited from the programme and have raised over £13 million in investment and grants, providing employment opportunities.

Find out more about some of the Techcelerate participants.

Techcelerate is a four-month programme run by Imperial Enterprise, which aims to support researchers in creating impact through commercialising research.

The goal is to support as many researchers as possible to make real-world impact with their skills and inventions developed at Imperial College London.

Our focus is deep technology – innovations in energy, resources, artificial intelligence, medical devices and technologies, quantum, advanced materials and biotechnology applications across a range of industries.

Why should you get involved?

As of 2022, 62 early career researchers have benefited from the programme.

13 of these have moved to share their expertise in industry jobs.

23 Startups have been founded from ideas explored on Techcelerate

They’ve raised over £36.5 million and support 178 jobs.

What are the benefits?

Benefits for participants

The Techcelerate programme provides the learning and skills development for researchers to begin commercialising an invention. Researchers receive support from programme staff and Imperial Enterprise to get out of the lab and explore real-world applications of their research. Over the programme they engage with prospective customers, regulators, suppliers, partners and competitors to discover the commercial potential of their research. In the second stage of the programme, selected teams have access to resources to enable them to conduct customer discovery for their envisaged technology or product.

The programme uses an evidence-based approach that enables participants to form and test their hypothetical business models, and ensure a close fit between their technology and market needs.

At the end of the programme, teams will be given guidance on how to develop their idea further, including suggestions of any programmes or opportunities that might be suitable and access to Imperial's Enterprise ecosystem.

Each participant can benefit from:

  • Entrepreneurial training and development of a new skill set
  • Creating new industry connections
  • Stronger support for grant funding, fellowships
  • Development of the business case for a new innovation
  • Access to Imperial’s entrepreneurial ecosystem

Benefits for partners, panellists and coaches

To support our participants and their exciting new innovations, the team collaborates with both internal and external experts and industry partners. We want participants to get as much exposure to industry as possible throughout the programme, making our collaborators and stakeholders an important part of their journey.

Collaborators are invited to get involved in programme activities, giving feedback and advice to participants and are encouraged to connect with participants and form part of their network. We also sometimes feature our collaborators in media and marketing activities.

Benefits for supervising PIs

The Enterprise Lab programmes offer a range of opportunities to enhance staff commercial knowledge and skills to support translational research. This increased awareness of commercialisation opportunities can be shared with the line managers as well as with other colleagues in the lab.

This includes better understanding of the market landscape, improved communication and self-management skills, different approach to thinking about ideas and an increased network of potential collaborators and partners.

Specifically, the programme supports:

  • Upskilling your lab group
  • Creating new industry connections
  • Grant funding, fellowships
  • The business case for a new innovation
  • Access to Imperial’s entrepreneurial ecosystem
