Under the Equality Act 2010, sexual orientation is a protected characteristic relating to a person's sexual orientation towards:
- persons of the same sex
- persons of the opposite sex
- persons of either sex
More than one in twenty people in the current UK workforce is lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB). Despite the Equality Act 2010, the LGB community continues to face discrimination at work.
Action at Imperial
To show our commitment to improving workplace culture for LGBT staff, Imperial was one of the first HEIs to sign up to Stonewall's Diversity Champions Programme, designed to promote understanding and good practice around issues of sexual orientation in the workplace.
All Imperial staff and students are expected to set good examples and to take responsibility for ensuring work and study areas are free from unacceptable behaviour. Imperial Expectations outlines the expected behaviour for the College's leaders, managers, and supervisors.
Imperial asks all members of staff to declare their sexual orientation and other personal details. You can do this through ICIS Self Service. This information helps the College form a better understanding of the workforce so that we can identify if all staff are being treated fairly.
