Overview

This Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) standard course teaches techniques to provide help to someone (staff or students) experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained. The course is divided as follows:

  • What is mental health?
  • Suicide
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Psychosis

In each section you'll learn how to:

  • Spot the early signs of a mental health problem
  • Feel confident helping someone experiencing a mental health problem
  • Provide help on a first aid basis
  • Help prevent someone from hurting themselves or others
  • Help stop a mental illness from getting worse
  • Help someone recover faster
  • Guide someone towards the right support
  • Reduce the stigma of mental health problems

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

It is ideal for all staff, but particularly those who work with students, manage teams, and any front-line staff. Prior to an application please read MHFA FAQs (Word) to ensure you are able to meet the commitments of the course.

FURTHER INFORMATION

You'll receive a MHFA Standard manual that you can take away with you at the end of the course and also an attendance certificate from MHFA England to say you are now Mental Health First Aider.

MHFA Courses- Frequently Asked Questions


1.    What is the difference between MHFA Lite and the two-day MHFA course?

The MHFA Lite course is a three-hour introduction course to mental health. It is a light touch introduction to anyone who may be interested in finding out more. It is not designed to be an in-depth training course, but provides an overview of what you may encounter in the work or study place.
 
The two-day MHFA course teaches techniques to provide help to someone (staff or students) experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained. It is in-depth and provides delegates with the skills required to be MHFAiders and be called upon if required for pro-active or reactive involvement. It is for people who are willing to take on this responsibility, as well as promoting mental health and wellbeing in their departments.

2.    Do I need prior knowledge of mental health to attend the two-day course?

No, prior knowledge is not required, but an interest in the subject is strongly advisable.
 
3.    Why do I have to apply for the two day course?

We have a high number of staff interested in the course, as well as a long waiting list. Therefore, we have to ensure those wishing to attend can commit to the course requirements both during and after the course.
 
4.    I am unable to book on the course, what should I do?

A number of spaces on the course have been reserved for priority groups that the College wishes to target, this means there are fewer open space available. Consequently you might only be offered a space   much closer to the actual date if these are not all taken up. You will therefore be added to the waiting list, so that if a space does become available, you will receive a confirmation of booking  from Imperial Training approximately 2 weeks prior to the training.  If you do not receive confirmation by at least a week prior to the course then this indicates there are no more spaces available on that session. 

5.    Why is College targeting certain staff to become MHFA qualified?

There is an uneven spread of Mental Health First Aiders across campuses.  The highest proportion of which are Professional and Support Services Staff based at South Kensington. In order to ensure a more even spread of Mental Health First Aiders, the College wishes to target staff across campuses and tutorial, academic, and research fields. This is aimed to be similar to the set up and supply of Physical First Aiders. The aim is to ensure  a more even distribution of MHFA trained staff that can be called upon and readily available geographically in the location needed 

6.    Why does my line manager have to approve my attendance at the two-day course? 
Due to the commitment involved your line manager will need to be aware so you can both balance the day-to-day working requirements while you are on the course and after the course.
 
7.    I can do one day of the two-day course, but not the other, can I still attend?
No, you must attend both days for the entire duration of the day from 09.30-16.30 each day.
 
8.    Can I do the first day of the course and then the second day of the two-day course another time?
No, you must attend both days for the entire duration of the day from 09.30-16.30 each day.
 
9.    I have to leave early on one of the days, can I still attend?
No, you must attend both days for the full duration of the day from 09.30-16.30 each day.
 
10.  I have an existing mental health condition, can I still attend?
You may apply to attend the course, but please be mindful that the course can be emotionally demanding and can evoke strong feeling, especially for delegates who are currently experiencing or supporting mental-ill health. It may be worth emailing equality@imperial.ac.uk with FAQ 10 in the subject line, with all your details to discuss the best option for you.
  
11.  More than five of us from one department want to apply for the same course, are we able to?
No, a maximum of five people from any given area in the College or department can attend a course. If you have more people interested, please complete the bespoke training form and a member of the equality team will get back to you within seven working days.
 
12.  When will I hear if my application has been successful?
Your place will be confirmed or you will be provided with feedback if you are unsuccessful within seven working days of receipt.
 
13.  Can my manager and I both attend the same course?
This is a decision that you and your manager will have to take and discuss together to ensure it is operationally feasible. You will also have to decide whether you will both be able to participate freely together on the course.  
 
14.  What if I know people on my course and don’t feel I can fully participate?
We will send a delegate list one week prior to the start date of the course. You will have an opportunity to see a list of names and decide if you would like to go ahead or be moved onto another course.
 
15.  Do I have to supply my own materials?
You will need to bring a pen and a notepad. A course manual and all refreshments are provided for you, for both MHFA and MHFA Lite.
 
16.  When will I receive my certificate?
You will receive your certificate via email three months after the course. It could take longer in some cases.
 
17.  What do I do if I don’t get my certificate?
You will need to email support@accredible.comwith your name, email address and the date you attended the course. you can also use this link to request missing certificates https://www.accredible.com/user/get_certificates 
 
18.  What happens after the course?
Your name will be displayed on department notice boards alongside that of physical first aiders. You will be added to the list of College-wide MHFAiders online and visible to all. You will also be added to a mailing list with other MHFAiders to receive relevant information and be kept up-to-date with activities taking place in the College.
 
19.  Is there refresher training?
One of the MHFA trainers organises termly forums with MHFAiders to share learning and best practice.
 
20.  What happens if no-one contacts me in my role as a  MHFAider?
You are still a MHFAider and your skills are still essential. We encourage you to attend the termly forums to maintain the knowledge. You do not know when you may be called upon personally or professionally.
 
21.  What should I do if I am unable to be a MHFAider for personal or professional reasons? Can I step down?
This is not ideal, however we do appreciate life and work commitments mean that you are not able to do this. If you need to step down, please email equality@imperial.ac.uk to be removed from the list.
 
 22.  How is my interaction as a MHFAider recorded?
An online form is being designed in order to enable MHFAiders to capture this information.  
 
23.  I have lost my manual, can I get another one?
Yes, you can get a replacement manual for a fee of £30. To do this please email equality@imperial.ac.uk
