Spanish is the most popular language to study amongst adult learners in Britain, partly due to the popularity of Spain as a holiday and retirement destination, and partly due to its importance in global trade and culture. Developing in the Iberian peninsula at the end of the fifth-century CE with the collapse of the Roman Empire, Castilian Spanish became the predominant language in the region at the end of the Middle Ages and is now the official language of Spain alongside Basque, Catalan and Galician.
It is spoken as a first language by an astonishing 493 million people, with an estimated 100 million additional Spanish speakers when you include second-language speakers. In addition to Spain, it is also the dominant language in much of South and Central America, parts of the Caribbean, Mexico and also for many people living in the southern United States. It is also present in areas of northern Africa and as one of the official languages of Equatorial Guinea.
Whether you are a beginner or you have some experience of speaking Spanish, the classes we offer at Imperial College are designed to help you develop your language skills quickly and effectively, in a friendly and supportive environment led by expert tutors.

Course Information
What language level should I choose?
Choosing the right language level
It is very important to book onto a course which is a good match for your level of ability, and we aim to make the process of deciding which is the right course level for you as simple as possible.
- If you are a complete beginner you should, of course, enrol on a Beginner's course.
- The Elementary level course is for those who already possess elementary level proficiency. It is not a course for absolute Beginners seeking to acquire elementary level Spanish skills.
If you do already have some experience in Spanish please first review our course descriptions to try to identify the course level which should be most suitable for you. Especially if you are out of practice, or have been out of formal education for a while, please be reasonably sure and realistic about your level of proficiency.
Before proceeding with enrolment please complete our online level assessment test even if you have only very basic knowledge of Spanish. Kindly contact our Spanish Assistant Coordinator, Ms Almudena Sanchez-Villen, who will send you the link to the test and provide further guidance concerning your level.
