SUMMARY:Integrated energy systems and their role in integrating variable re
 newable energy
DESCRIPTION:Integrated energy systems and their role in integrating variabl
e renewable energy\nEnergy Futures Lab is delighted to be hosting Professo
r Mark O’Malley\, Director of the UCD Energy Institute.\nEnergy systems
have evolved from individual energy devices into complex integrated system
s that have strong coupling between energy vectors across spatial and temp
oral scales. Energy Systems Integration (ESI) is the optimization of ener
gy systems across these energy vectors and scales.\nESI is most valuable a
t the interfaces where the coupling and interactions are strong and repres
ent a challenge and/or an opportunity. ESI control variables are technica
l\, economic\, regulatory with a strong human dimension. ESI benefits inc
lude increase reliability and performance\, minimisation of cost and envir
onmental impacts and in particular\, increased penetration of renewable en
ergy sources.\nBiography\nMark O’Malley\, is the Professor of Electrical
Engineering\, director of the Energy Institute and Electricity Research C
entre at University College Dublin\, Ireland and co-founder of the Interna
tional Institute for Energy Systems Integration (IESI). He is a Member of
the Royal Irish Academy and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and E
lectronic Engineers and is recognized as a world authority on grid integra
tion of renewable energy with active research collaborations in Europe\, C
hina and the United States\, in particular with the National Renewable Ene
rgy Laboratory.\nRegistration\nPlease register in advance via the eventbri
te page.\nDirections\nThe Clore Lecture theatre is located in the Departme
nt of Computing (building #13 on the campus map). The simplest way to the
venue is via the entrance on Queen’s gate. The doors to the lecture thea
tre are just inside the entrance there.\nSocial media\nIf you are discussi
ng the event on social media use the hashtag #ImpEnergy and follow us on T
 witter\, Facebook\, Google+\, Instagram or Youtube.
