SUMMARY:Vertical stratification of adult mosquitoes within a tropical rainf
 orest in Malaysia
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis\nMalaria cases caused by Plasmodium knowlesi\, a sim
ian parasite naturally found in long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques\, are
rapidly increasing in Sabah\, Malaysia. This seminar will give a brief ove
rview of malaria in Malaysia and the problems faced when controlling simia
n malarias. Results will be presented on how mosquito communities differ f
rom ground to canopy level and across different forest disturbance gradien
ts in Malaysia. \n \nBiography\nHayley is a PhD student based at the Cen
tre for Environmental Policy (CEP) at Imperial College London. Her researc
h focuses on how land use change affects mosquito abundance and community
composition in Sabah\, Malaysia. She has spent 15 months of her PhD living
in a tropical rainforest to collect mosquito specimens. Hayley holds an M
Sc in Entomology from Imperial College London\, and a BSc from the Univers
ity of Reading. Hayley’s research is funded by Natural Environment Resea
 rch Council (NERC).
