SUMMARY:Imagination Technologies: Developing technologies for systems on ch
 ip (SoC)
DESCRIPTION:To register for this lecture\, email Clare Drysdale with ‘Ima
gination Technologies’ in the subject line.\nAbstract\nSoCs have transfo
rmed the semiconductor and electronics industries\, integrating staggering
breadth of functionality and performance into highly cost-effective\, low
power but complex single-chip solution platforms. However\, there has bee
n another transformation: many of the major functional blocks on today’s
SoCs are provided by Silicon IP providers rather than designed in-house.
\nTony will review some of the important technological and market trends
in key segments and discuss how Imagination Technologies is helping to cr
eate the ability to translate vision into reality \, and to constantly enh
ance it.\nHe will touch on key functional blocks in modern SoCs explaining
how the GPU is becoming the new driving force not only for modern applica
tions but also for design methodologies and process technologies\, and how
heterogeneous processing is transforming the way SoCs handle key user app
lications across multimedia\, processor\, communications\, cloud and more.
\nBiography\nTony gained his B.Eng (1st class Hons) in Electrical and Elec
tronic Engineering from the University of Melbourne\, Australia\, in 1979.
\nHe joined the Space Division of British Aerospace\, where he was involve
d in the design and implementation of communications and control systems\,
and some of the first LSI devices used in space. He became one of the you
ngest ever managers at BAE\, running their serial bus and embedded OS acti
vities for spacecraft.\nHe then joined Inmos\, leading their DSP chipset a
nd Transputer systems engineering activities. After being co-founder and C
TO of a workstation-based parallel processor startup\, he then moved to LS
I Logic where he was Technical Director for their mixed signal ASIC divisi
on\, later becoming LSI’s European Strategic Marketing Director. He then
moved to Hitachi (later Renesas) and later Panasonic\, in both cases hold
ing senior engineering management roles in their semiconductor design and
business development operations.\nJoining the Technology division of Imagi
nation Technologies in 2006\, Tony manages all aspects of technology and c
orporate marketing\, as well as all marketing communications\, strategic p
artnerships and ecosystems. He was appointed Executive Vice President Mark
eting in February 2013\, and is a member of Imagination’s Executive Mana
 gement Board.
