DESCRIPTION:The ortho-fused aromatic compounds\, termed the helicenes\, are
  fascinating molecules whose aromatic framework is rendered helical or spi
 rally coiled due to the inability for conjoined rings to occupy the same p
 lane. As such\, the helicenes are one of the few classes of fully conjugat
 ed aromatic molecules that display a non-planar\, helically chiral\, archi
 tecture. Carbo- and heterohelicenes have undergone a surge in interest rec
 ently due to their unique optical and electronic properties\, closely asso
 ciated with their inherent chirality. This talk will give an overview of 
 our recent exciting preliminary results using helicenes in novel organic e
 lectronic devices. We have recently found that by simply doping a conventi
 onal light emitting polymer (F8BT) with a small amount of a single handedn
 ess helicene\, we are able to fabricate circularly polarized (CP) light em
 itting organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs)\, which emit substantial leve
 ls of CP-electroluminescence directly from the polymer\; the sign of the C
 P light corresponding to the handedness of the dopant employed. Furthermor
 e\, we have found that organic field effect transistors (OFETs) based on e
 nantiomerically pure 1-aza[6]helicene can be fabricated and importantly ca
 n reversibly detect and differentiate CP-light.
