SUMMARY:Computational Methods for Enterprise-wide Optimization of Process I
 ndustries
DESCRIPTION:Professor Ignacio E. Grossmann\, Carnegie Mellon University\, p
resents this lecture on\; “Computational Methods for Enterprise-wide Opt
imization of Process Industries”\nAbstract: Due to increasing competitiv
e pressures for reducing costs and inventories\, Enterprise-wide Optimizat
ion (EWO) has become a major goal in the process industries. EWO involves
optimizing the operations of supply\, manufacturing and distribution activ
ities of a company. The major operational activities include planning\, sc
heduling\, real-time optimization and inventory control. A major focus in
EWO is the scheduling of the manufacturing facilities\, as well as their m
odeling at the proper level of detail\, often with nonlinear process model
 s. In order to achieve EWO throughout the process industry we provide an o
verview of computational tools that allow the full integration and large-s
cale solution of the optimization models\, as well as the incorporation of
accurate models for the manufacturing facilities. These tools address the
following areas: a) Modeling of production planning and scheduling models
for the various components of the supply chain\; b) Multi-scale optimizat
ion for coordinating the optimization of models over geographically distri
buted locations and for a time horizons spanning from weeks to years\; c)
Optimization under uncertainty to account for stochastic variations (e.g.
 demands\, process yields\, breakdowns)\; d) Algorithms and advanced comput
er architectures to support the three previous points. We present results
on the several industrial projects that include simultaneous planning and
scheduling of multisite batch reactors\, global optimization of refinery M
INLP scheduling models\, multistage stochastic programming models for off-
shore oil and gas exploration.\nBiography: Ignacio E. Grossmann is the R.
 R. Dean University Professor of Chemical Engineering\, and former Departme
nt Head at Carnegie Mellon University. He obtained his B.S. degree at the
 Universidad Iberoamericana\, Mexico City\, in 1974\, and his M.S. and Ph.D
. at Imperial College in 1975 and 1977\, respectively.  After working at
the Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo in 1978\, he joined Carnegie Mellon i
n 1979.  He is currently director of the “Center for Advanced Process D
ecision-making\,” an industrial consortium that involves about 20 petrol
eum\, chemical\, engineering and software companies.\nIgnacio Grossmann is
a member of the National Academy of Engineering\, and associate editor of
AIChE Journal and member of editorial board of Computers and Chemical Eng

from Åbo Akademi in Finland\, Fellow of INFORMS and AIChE\, Top 15 Most C
ited Author in Computer Science by ISI\, and 2003 Computer Society Prize o
f INFORMS.  He is recipient of the Best Technical Paper in 1988\, 1996\,
1998 and 2000 of Computers and Chemical Engineering. He was the 6th Robert
Vaughn Lecturer at Caltech in 1986\, the 18th Ashton Hall Cary Lecturer a
t Georgia Tech in 2002\, the Kelley Lecturer at Purdue University in 2004\
, the Mary Upson Visiting Professor at Cornell in 1986-87\, and a Fulbrigh
t Senior Lecturer at the Universidad de Cantabria in Spain in 2003-2004.
He is a member and Director of the American Institute of Chemical Enginee
rs where he is a fellow\, Institute for Operations Research and Management
Science where is also a fellow\, and American Chemical Society.  He was
chair of the Technology Advisory Board of Engineering Sciences at Dow Chem
ical and has been consultant to ExxonMobil\, Air Products and Instituto Me
xicano del Petróleo.\nThe research interests of  Ignacio Grossmann are i
n the areas of process synthesis\, energy integration\, process flexibilit
y\, planning and scheduling of batch and continuous processes\, supply cha
in optimization\, and mixed-integer and logic-based optimization.  He has
authored more than 300 papers\, several monographs on design cases studie
s\, and the textbook “Systematic Methods of Chemical Process Design\,”
which he co-authored with Larry Biegler and Art Westerberg.   He has al
so organized the Virtual Library on Process Systems Engineering: http://ce
