HSMR21 Featured Speaker Professor Ann Majewicz Fey

The Hamlyn Symposium on Medical Robotics (HSMR) is now in its 13th year and has provided an annual forum for surgeons and engineers from across the globe to network and explore the latest developments in medical robotics. Every year researchers, clinicians and engineers are invited to submit papers on a range of topics covering clinical specialities in Urology, Cardiac Surgery, Neuro Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Gynaecology, ENT, Orthopaedic and Paediatric Surgery.

This year we plan to build beyond the previous achievements and take the symposium to even higher successes with the theme of Surgery and Beyond’. We have already received full CPD accreditation from the Royal College of Surgeons and to complement this we are planning a programme with increased focus on clinical practitioner centered talks, workshops and presentations.

From Tool to Assistant: Developing Adaptive Surgical Robots for the Operating Room

 

Prof Ann Majewicz FeyWe are pleased to announce Professor Ann Majewicz Fey, UT Austin, is one of the featured speakers of the Hamlyn Symposium on Medical Robotics 2021. Professor Majewicz Fey will give a talk on ‘From Tool to Assistant: Developing Adaptive Surgical Robots for the Operating Room’followed by a Q&A session.

Abstract

Human-generated, preventable errors, particularly those made intra-operatively, can lead to morbidity and mortality for the patient, poor training outcomes for residents, and high costs for the hospital. Surgical robotic systems could be designed to avoid these errors and improve training outcomes by interpreting, reacting to, and assisting human behavior. This talk will describe some novel data-driven methods to predict, in real-time, surgical style, expertise levels, and task difficulty; as well as present new systems that could be used to assist with surgical intervention or training in a variety of domains.

Biography

Ann Majewicz Fey completed B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering at the University of St. Thomas, the M.S.E. degree in Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. Dr. Majewicz Fey joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UT Austin as an Associate Professor in August 2020, where she directs the Human-Enabled Robotic Technology Laboratory. She holds at courtesy appointment in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center and at the Dell Medical School. Her research interests focus on the interface between humans and robotic systems, with an emphasis on improving the delivery of surgical and interventional care, both for the patient and the provider.
