SUMMARY:SPC Seminar – Plasma – Jon Skidmore – FLARE\, First Light Fus
ion’s new approach to economically viable inertial fusion energy
DESCRIPTION:External Speaker: Dr Jon Skidmore\, ex-PhD Student in the Plasm
 a Physics Group\, SPC Community.\nTitle: FLARE\, First Light Fusion’s ne
w approach to economically viable inertial fusion energy.\nAbstract:\nFusi
on energy represents a potentially inexhaustible source of low-carbon powe
r\, yet despite sustained international investment and significant scienti
fic progress\, a commercially viable fusion pathway remains elusive.\nThis
presentation introduces FLARE (Fusion via Low-power Assembly and Rapid Ex
citation)\, a new concept developed by First Light Fusion to address longs
tanding challenges in inertial fusion. FLARE approaches inertial fusion th
rough three key principles: (1) a novel target architecture that decouples
compression from heating\, thereby reducing main driver power requirement
 s whilst enabling higher energy gain\; (2) low-power pulsed compression\,
which offers a simpler\, lower-cost\, and more efficient alternative to co
 nventional high-power lasers\; and (3) a liquid lithium pool reactor\, des
igned to absorb neutrons\, breed tritium\, and shield structural component
s\, thereby extending operational lifetime and improving both economic via
bility and engineering feasibility.\nTogether\, these principles underpin
an integrated\, robust\, and scalable system that offers a credible and ec
onomically viable pathway to inertial fusion energy.
