SUMMARY:From Replacement to Augmentation: A Human-Centered Approach to Mult
 imodal AI
DESCRIPTION:James Landay\, Stanford Professor of Computer Science\, Denning
Faculty Director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial
Intelligence is coming to speak at Imperial College London on 13 May.\nThi
s event is exclusively for Stanford Alumni and Imperial Staff and Students
. We are fortunate to host this event at Imperial College in collaboratio
n with the Stanford Club of Great Britain\, and with the support of Mary
Ryan (Imperial Vice-Provost for Research and Enterprise) and Mark Kennedy
(Director\, Data Science Imperial).\nFrom Replacement to Augmentation: A
Human-Centered Approach to Multimodal AI Design\nAs the landscape of artif
icial intelligence evolves\, the need for AI systems that embrace the full
range of human experience has never been more important. Drawing on resea
rch from the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI)\, I will explo
re strategies for embedding human-centered design principles into AI techn
ologies. By emphasizing the power of interdisciplinary collaboration\, I w
ill illustrate how AI can enhance human capability and shift the narrative
around AI from one of replacement to one of augmentation. I also will sha
re a vision for how multimodal user interfaces can create richer\, more ho
listic interactions with AI and highlight how academia and industry can co
-create AI solutions that serve as partners in enhancing human agency whil
e fostering positive social impact within diverse communities.\nBio – Ja
mes Landay\n\nJames Landay is a Professor of Computer Science and the Anan
d Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan Professor in the School of Engineering a
t Stanford University. He co-founded and is Denning Director of the Stanfo
rd Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI). Landay prev
iously was a tenured faculty member at Cornell Tech\, the University of Wa
shington\, and UC Berkeley. He was also Director of Intel Labs Seattle and
co-founder of NetRaker. While on sabbatical at Microsoft Research Asia in
Beijing\, he taught for one semester at Tsinghua University. Landay recei
ved his BS in EECS from UC Berkeley\, and MS and PhD in Computer Science f
rom Carnegie Mellon University. He is a member of the ACM SIGCHI Academy\,
an ACM Fellow\, and was awarded the ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Research Award.
