SUMMARY:Converging on Cancer: Dr Anke Nijhuis and Dr Sally George
DESCRIPTION:The CRUK Convergence Science Centre is a partnership between Im
perial College London and The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). We aim t
o bring together researchers from different disciplines across both instit
utions to develop innovative ways to address challenges in cancer research
to benefit patients. \nThis seminar series brings together speakers from
Imperial and ICR to present their research and how they use convergence
science to answer cancer-related questions.\nThis session will explore adv
ances in precision medicine and targeted cancer biology relevant to paedia
tric cancers.\n \nDr Anke Nijhuis (Imperial)\nDrugging the spliceosome wi
th molecular glue degraders of RBM39 in cancer\nRNA splicing is an essenti
al step in gene expression that is frequently dysregulated in cancer\, cre
ating a therapeutic vulnerability that remains largely untapped in the cli
nic. The splicing factor RBM39 has emerged as a particularly attractive ta
rget\, as it can be selectively depleted by aryl sulfonamide molecular glu
e degraders\, which redirect the CRL4-DCAF15 ubiquitin ligase to ubiquitin
ate and degrade RBM39. Loss of RBM39 produces widespread aberrant splicing
\, disrupting transcripts essential for tumour cell survival. I will share
recent work from my group on the sensitivity of MYCN-driven tumours to RB
M39 degradation\, and on how interference with RNA splicing disrupts DNA d
amage repair and modulates the immune system. I will also discuss how we u
se these insights to rationally design combinatorial approaches to improve
treatment responses.\n \nDr Sally George (ICR)\nThe Stratified Medicine
Paediatrics Precision Medicine Programme for children with cancer\nStratif
ied Medicine Paediatrics (SMPaeds) is a national precision medicine progra
mme for children with cancer aiming to develop and validate biomarker assa
ys in the research setting then transfer them into the NHS. I will discuss
what we learned from SMPaeds1 and how that has informed the design of the
SMPaeds2 clinical trial which is currently recruiting.\n \nWho can atten
d?\nResearchers\, students and anyone with an interest in convergence scie
nce relating to cancer research across Imperial and ICR are welcome to r
egister. Please email icr-imperial-convergence.centre@imperial.ac.uk to re
 ceive the registration link.\n
