SUMMARY:Systems design and optimization in electrified aviation: models\, m
ethods\, and emerging insights with Dr. Gökçin Çınar
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Brahmal Institute Seminar Series\, we are deligh
ted to host an upcoming talk on electrified aircraft and future aviation s
ystems. A reception of tea and coffee will follow the seminar\, offering a
n opportunity to continue the discussion.\n \nAbstract\nThe electrificati
on of aircraft requires more than incremental changes to propulsion: it ca
lls for a fundamentally new way of thinking about how aircraft\, propulsio
n architectures\, power management systems\, and operations interact as a
unified whole. At the Integrated Design of Efficient Aerospace Systems (ID
EAS) Laboratory at the University of Michigan\, we develop computational f
rameworks that couple physics-based modeling\, multidisciplinary design op
timization\, and systems engineering\, all accelerated by machine learning
\, to address the challenges and opportunities of this evolving field.\nTh
is seminar will show how we leverage these frameworks to rapidly explore t
he complex trade-offs inherent in novel aircraft concepts. We will discuss
recent technical results and insights from our research\, emphasizing via
ble design strategies and architectures that demonstrate significant effic
iency gains in electrified aircraft. Key topics will include trade-off ana
 lysis across vehicle configuration\, propulsion–power integration\, and
operational profiles\, illustrated with examples drawn from our open-sourc
e design tools and current projects.\nAbout the speaker\nDr. Gökçin Çı
nar is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan\, where she di
rects the Integrated Design of Efficient Aerospace Systems (IDEAS) Laborat
ory. Her research advances computational systems design and optimization\,
with an emphasis on future aircraft and propulsion concepts.\nDr. Çınar
is the recipient of the 2025 AIAA Lawrence Sperry Award for pioneering co
ntributions to electrified aircraft and sustainable aviation\, and has rec
eived multiple best paper recognitions from AIAA and IEEE. She most recent
ly served as Chair of the AIAA Electrified Aircraft Technology Technical C
ommittee\, with longstanding service on the AIAA/IEEE Electric Aircraft Te
chnologies Symposium (EATS). She earned her Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Aerospace E
ngineering from Georgia Tech\, and her B.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from
  Middle East Technical University.
