SUMMARY:Air pollution – the Invisible Killer
DESCRIPTION:It is difficult to see the air pollution around us but it’
s impact can be seen in the chronic illnesses that affect the lives of so
many. In the UK an estimated 30\,000 people per year are dying prematurely
from exposure to air pollution.\nIt is not an impossible problem or so
mething that we should have to accept. Tackling air pollution is an opport
unity to improve the lives of everyone but it remains invisible in our dai
ly lives and largely absent from the agendas of those who can bring about
solutions.\nThe 70th anniversary of the UK’s Clean Air Act is fast ap
proaching.  Dr Gary Fuller will take us on a tour of air pollution\, from
smog plagued streets of London\, to the acid rain damaged landscapes of S
candinavia\, arriving at the challenges we face today and the solutions be
fore us.\nDr Gary Fuller is an air pollution scientist in the Environme
ntal Research Group\, part of the School of Public Health. His research fo
cuses on measuring air pollution\, understanding why it is changing and ho
w it affects our health. He has a regular column in the Guardian newspap
er and his book\, The Invisible Killer – the rising global threat of ai
r pollution and how we can fight back is published by Melville House bo
 oks.
