SUMMARY:Geotechnics Seminar: Distributional Inversion for Engineering Ap
 plications
DESCRIPTION:Seminar abstract:\n\nMany engineering settings involve large co
llections of physical assets where all assets are highly related to one an
other\, yet also have certain key individual variations affecting their re
sponse to their environment and use. This presentation is concerned with d
eveloping data processing methodologies whereby one can efficiently levera
ge large amounts of response data from collections of physical systems to
infer properties of the population of assets as a whole. We call this “d
istributional inversion.” We will look at examples of this methodology i
n problems of subsurface groundwater flow\, structural dynamics\, aerodyna
mics of wind turbine blades\, and material mechanics. Furthermore\, we sho
w how we can accelerate the learning task by concurrently learning surroga
te models which can efficiently approximate expensive numerical simulation
s.\n\nSpeaker bio:\n\nArnaud Vadeboncoeur will be joining Imperial Coll
ege London in October 2026 as a Research Fellow (IRF) between the Departme
nt of Mathematics and Imperial’s I-X Center for AI in Science. He is cur
rently a postdoc in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cam
bridge in the Computational Statistics and Machine Learning lab\, working
with Prof. Mark Girolami. Prior to this\, he completed his PhD in Engineer
ing at Cambridge with Prof. Fehmi Cirak and earned his undergraduate degre
e in Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa.
