SUMMARY:Bioengineering Department Seminar with Professor Mark Lythgoe
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: \n\nThis seminar is IN PERSON ONLY in room RSM
2.28\, Second Floor\, Royal School of Mines at Imperial’s South Kensingt
on campus. Click here for the South Kensington campus map.\nRefreshments
and networking will follow this seminar in RSM 3.24.\n\n\nGUEST SPEAKER:\n
Professor Mark Lythgoe\, Founder & Director\, Centre for Advanced Biomedic
al Imaging (CABI)\, UCL\nCo-Director of the UCL Department of Imaging\, UC
L\nDirector of Biomedical Imaging Research\, The Francis Crick Institute\n
TALK TITLE: \nNaked to the bone: Advances in biomedical imaging\nABSTRACT
:\nFor the past 400 years\, our understanding of biology and disease has r
elied largely on the invasive examination of organs and tissues. Advances
in biomedical imaging over the last four decades have transformed this lan
 dscape\, enabling non-invasive visualisation of anatomy\, physiology\, pha
rmacology\, and cellular and molecular processes in living systems.\nIn th
is talk\, I will highlight both recent advances and blue-sky research from
UCL’s Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging\, including MRI-guided see
ds\, imaging brain clearance\, microplastic photoacoustic and optical imag
ing as well as MRI brain activation\, illustrating the creativity and tran
sformative potential of modern imaging science.\nBIOGRAPHY:\nProfessor Mar
k Lythgoe is Director of UCL’s Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging\,
one of the world’s leading imaging centres. The Centre brings together 5
 0 researchers and 14 state-of-the-art imaging modalities\, enabling resear
ch that bridges discovery science and clinical practice. As Director of th
e UCL Department of Imaging\, Mark has played a pivotal role in translatin
g cutting-edge imaging technologies into clinical use. He has secured more
than £45 million in research funding and authored over 300 publications
in leading journals\, including Nature\, Nature Photonics\, Nature Medi
cine\, and The Lancet.\nIn 2024\, Mark was awarded the prestigious IET Ac
hievement Medal for a distinguished contribution to medical imaging\, pres
ented at the ‘Global Engineering Oscars’. He is also recognised for hi
s commitment to public engagement. During his tenure as Director of the Ch
eltenham Science Festival\, it has grown into one of the largest science f
 estivals in the world.
