SUMMARY:Converging on Cancer: International Seminar Series – Dr Romeo Rac
z (Imperial) Prof Simon Schäfer (TUM)
DESCRIPTION:The CRUK Convergence Science Centre is a partnership between Im
perial College London and The Institute of Cancer Research. In collaborati
on with our international partners we arrange a regular international semi
nar ‘Converging on Cancer’ on the topic of interdisciplinary cancer re
search. Our partners are:\n\nTechnical University of Munich (TUM)\nNanyang
Technological University (NTU)\nBiotech Research and Innovation Centre (B
RIC – University of Copenhagen)\nÉcole Polytechnique Fédérale de Laus
anne (EPFL).\n\n\nIn this series\, we bring together speakers from across
these institutions to present their research and how they use convergence
science to answer cancer-related questions.\nThis seminar will have a brai
n cancer focus\, particularly on engineering human brain models to underst
 and disease.\n \nThursday 3rd September 2026\, 10-11am BST\, 11-12pm CEST
 \, 5-6pm SGT \n\nSpeakers\n \n\nDr Romeo Racz (Imperial)\n\nTalk details
coming soon\nProf Simon Schäfer (TUM)\nRebuilding Human Brain-Immune Int
erfaces: Engineering Living Models of Human Brain Development and Disease\
nBrain-resident immune cells actively sense\, interpret and reshape their
tissue environment\, yet their most relevant functions remain difficult to
access in conventional model systems. This talk will present our efforts
to engineer human organoid and assembloid platforms that reconstruct brain
–immune interfaces in living tissue. By integrating stem-cell biology\,
bioengineering\, single-cell profiling and in vivo transplantation\, we us
e these systems to uncover how human microglia acquire context-dependent f
 unctions across health\, disease and tumor-associated environments\, and h
ow these functions might ultimately be reprogrammed for therapeutic benefi
t.\n\n \n\nWho can attend?\nResearchers\, students and anyone with an int
erest in convergence science relating to cancer research across our partn
ered institutions are welcome to register:\n\nCRUK Convergence Science Ce
