of ocean model theory and practice\nAbstract:\nWe discuss questions relat
ed to representation and parameterization in\nglobal ocean climate modelli
ng. First\, we consider mesoscale eddy\nbackscatter as a method that enhan
ces the energetics of scales\nexplicitly represented\, rather than paramet
erizing scales that are\nmissing.  Advances with backscatter suggest that
it can allow us to\nremove traditional mesoscale parameterizations well b
efore fully\nresolving the mesoscale.  However\, there remain outstanding
issues with\nbackscatter\, possibly related to ocean boundaries.  Second
\, we\nsummarize results on global climate modeling that point to the payo
ffs\narising from respecting the ocean’s relatively small levels of\nint
erior diapyncal mixing\, while admitting a suitably strong level of\nverti
cal buoyancy transport by mesoscale eddies.  This work has\nresulted\, fo
 r the first time\, in an understanding\, and resolution\, of\nthe climate
model drift conundrum that plagues all CMIP class models.\nWe close by spe
culating that fundamental advances in model theory and\npractice will resu
lt from enhancing the simulated vorticity and\npotential vorticity fields\
, particularly in their connection to\nmechanical processes at boundaries.
