SUMMARY:Departmental Seminar | Challenges in Carbon Electrochemistry: Energ
 y Storage and Carbon Capture
DESCRIPTION:Carbon-based electrodes play a critical role in many technologi
es designed to address global challenges\, including batteries\, supercapa
citors and carbon capture systems. However\, the complex and disordered na
ture of carbon makes it difficult to understand exactly how these material
s work.\nIn this seminar\, Prof. Forse will explore how the structure of c
arbon influences energy storage performance and uncover why carbon electro
des can capture CO₂ when electrically charged in water. Combining advanc
ed NMR spectroscopy with electrochemical studies\, this research offers ne
w insights into the fundamental properties of carbon and their potential i
mplications for future energy and sustainability technologies.\nSpeaker bi
o:\nAlex Forse is Professor of Materials Chemistry at the Yusuf Hamied Dep
artment of Chemistry. The Forse Group develops new materials and technolog
ies that can help to mitigate climate change. Professor Forse holds a pres
tigious UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship and a Europea
n Research Council starting grant\, and he was the recipient of a Leverhul
me Trust prize in chemistry in 2025. His current research focuses on the e
lectrochemical applications of disordered carbons in energy storage and ca
 rbon capture.
