SUMMARY:Junior Geometry Seminar – Edward Young
DESCRIPTION:Title: What they don’t tell you about schemes\nSpeaker: Edwar
d Young\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: I will give an introduction to scheme theor
 y. We will see that the Zariski topology\, very natural to an algebraist\,
has some rather counterintuitive quirks: open sets are dense and compact\
, nothing is Hausdorff\, and there are more points and data than we know w
hat to do with. In a series of examples\, we will see how to tame some of
these difficulties to produce a rich geometric theory.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n
\n\n\n\nSome snacks will be provided before and after the talk.\nGo to the
seminar main page.\nSubscribe to the mailing list.\n
