SUMMARY:Astrophysics Weekly Seminar: Mari-Liis Aru – Under UV Pressure: I
mprints of external photoevaporation on protoplanetary disks
DESCRIPTION:The evolution of protoplanetary disks is influenced by a combin
ation of internal processes linked to the central star\, and external infl
uences from the surrounding environment. Both pathways produce photoevapor
ative winds that drive disk dispersal from opposite directions. In star cl
usters\, the UV radiation from massive OB stars irradiates disks externall
y\, strongly affecting disk sizes\, masses\, and survival timescales. Unti
l recently\, the same emission lines were used for studying both internall
y and externally driven photoevaporative winds. However\, disentangling th
e winds is essential for interpreting spectroscopic observations and compl
eting models of disk evolution.\nIn this talk\, I will give an overview of
the recent studies on externally irradiated disks—proplyds\, in the Ori
on Nebula Cluster (ONC) with a focus on a spatially resolved dataset acqui
red with VLT/MUSE. I will present results in our effort to identify signat
ures unique to external photoevaporation\, including a comparison of ONC s
ources with those in low-mass star-forming regions\, and discuss tracers w
hich open new windows into researching proplyds.
