This webinar will focus on the benefits of clean power (e.g. economic and health improvement) and how to improve clean energy access. The webinar relates to the first clean power course, ‘Why move towards cleaner power?’ During the webinar, Dr Clementine Chambon and Sherry Stout will discuss the key enabling technologies and market forces required to provide universal energy access and how they can benefit communities who currently lack access to clean energy solutions.

There will be plenty of time for questions and answers from the audience.

The panelists will provide their own perspectives. The conversation will be followed by an interactive Q&A session with the audience. Please join the discussion and follow our campaign updates via #CleanPower on Twitter ahead of and during the webinar.

Speakers

Dr Clementine Chambon is the CTO and Co-Founder of Oorja Development Solutions Ltd, a social enterprise delivering clean energy services to farmers and businesses in rural India. Clementine leads Oorja’s technology strategy, engineering, project finance and fundraising for installation of solar irrigation systems, mini-grids and cold storages. She has technical expertise in energy systems modelling and cost-effective design of decentralised renewable energy systems and has worked as a renewable energy consultant to the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the European Commission.

Clementine is a frequent speaker on the topic of rural electrification and energy access and was among the authors and course teachers of the Clean Power Programme (MOOC 1 Module 4: Energy Access) developed by the Grantham Institute and CIFF. Clementine holds a Master’s in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Bioenergy from Imperial College London. She is an Echoing Green Climate Fellow, Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur, and MIT Technology Review’s Social Innovator of the Year Europe. Clementine’s interests lie in optimising delivery models for decentralised energy technologies to reach the most energy-deprived communities in the world.

Sherry Stout is an engineer in the Integrated Applications Center at NREL. Much of Sherry’s work at NREL focuses on energy development, including energy and resilience planning, resource assessment, microgrid assessment, and energy development for economic development. Sherry also works on international programs where she focuses on grid integration of distributed renewable generation, energy/water nexus issues, energy system resilience, and interconnection processes.

About the webinar series

The Grantham Institute at Imperial College London and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), are hosting a series of three webinars as part of the Clean Power MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) programme. The courses, taught by Imperial academics including Professor Joanna HaighDr Kris MurrayProfessor Richard GreenDr Ajay GambhirDr Jeffrey Hardy and Dr Clementine Chambon, focus on why the world urgently needs to shift to a cleaner power sector, how policy and regulation can create a ‘pro-renewables’ environment, and how to incorporate renewable energy into electricity grids.

Each webinar will provide an opportunity for learners to meet the course tutors at a live event, and also hear perspectives and ask questions from other clean power experts working in organisations such as IRENA and NREL.
