SUMMARY:What can stem cells do for us?
DESCRIPTION:Research into molecular signalling and stem cell science is rev
ealing new ways of treating illness.\nProfessor Melanie Welham was selecte
d to be the Executive Chair of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences R
esearch Council (BBSRC) when UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) came into b
eing on 1 April 2018.\nBefore April 2018 Melanie was interim Chief Executi
ve of BBSRC having previously served as Executive Director\, Science for B
BSRC.\nPrior to this\, Professor Welham worked at the University of Bath a
s Professor of Molecular Signalling and was the first woman to be appointe
d a professor in her department.\nMelanie is a leading researcher in molec
ular signalling and stem cell science. She obtained her first degree in Bi
ochemistry from Imperial College London before undertaking a PhD at UCL. U
ntil September 2011\, she was co-director of the Bath Centre for Regenerat
ive Medicine where she oversaw the activities of this interdisciplinary ce
ntre.\nEarlier in her career\, she was awarded a BBSRC Research Developmen
t Fellowship\, which enabled her to develop and pursue new research direct
ions. She moved from the study of signalling in white blood cells to seeki
ng to understand the fundamental mechanisms controlling the behaviour of e
 mbryonic stem cells.
