SUMMARY:A Changing Planet Seminar: Hydrogen scaling fundamental bottlenecks
  and tipping points for clean energy uptake for a sustainable future
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar Dr Reshma Rao and Dr Gbemi Oluleye\, new Granth
 am Institute Lecturers\, will present their research.\n\nDr Reshma Rao wil
 l describe the fundamental bottlenecks for the scaling up of current elect
 rolyser technologies to the terawatt scale and will present our recent adv
 ances in materials engineering to overcome some of these challenges. Hydro
 gen plays a critical role in the energy transformation to a sustainable fu
 ture\, due to its widespread applications as a fuel for transport\, feedst
 ock to chemical industries and a heat source for buildings and industry. L
 ow temperature water electrolysis is an effective way to produce green hyd
 rogen at scale using intermittent renewable energy. However\, this technol
 ogy suffers from significant material challenges. Catalysts that are used 
 in water electrolysers to accelerate the rate of water splitting to hydrog
 en and oxygen\, are subject to highly corrosive environments. Designing Ea
 rth abundant materials that are not only highly active but also stable und
 er these conditions is critical for the deployment of these technologies.\
 nDr Gbemi Oluleye has built a unique research experience and expertise at 
 the interface of engineering\, policy and innovation\, and economics\, whi
 ch enables her to address the affordability and cost barriers affecting th
 e uptake of clean technologies and fuels especially for decarbonising hard
  to abate sectors. Her research assesses the impact of interventions in ad
 dressing these barriers using optimisation-based decision frameworks under
  uncertainty. She plans to unpack the concept of Tipping Point in clean te
 chnology uptake using use-specific cases in the hard-to-abate sector durin
