 w a growing consensus that security can no longer be considered merely in 
 traditional military terms. If national security is defined as the ability
  of governments to protect their citizens\, economy and institutions again
 st threats\, then there is justification in today’s world to include non
 -military threats such as pandemics and climate change\, which are global 
 challenges that affect both people and states. \nNational security should 
 thus include energy security\, cybersecurity\, human security\, and enviro
 nmental security\, all of which are covered by the UN Sustainable Developm
 ent Goals. Failure to implement policies to achieve them could pose threat
 s to national security. How can technological solutions – adequately app
 lied – protect from these threats?\nAbout Ambassador Yvette Stevens\nAmb
 assador Yvette Stevens’ United Nations (UN) career spanned 1980 to 2008.
  An engineer by training\, she worked at the International Labour Office f
 rom 1980 to 1984 and then rose to Chief of the Programme and Technical Sup
 port Section at the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).\n
 From 1999 to 2004\, Ambassador Stevens was the Special Coordinator for Afr
 ica and the Least Developed Countries in the UN Department of Economic and
  Social Affairs and later\, the Director at the UN Office of the Special A
 dviser on Africa in New York.  \nShe served as Energy Policy Adviser to t
 he Sierra Leone Government from 2009 to 2012\, and was instrumental in dra
 wing up the first energy policy for the country.\nIn August 2012\, she was
  appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Nati
 ons Office and other International Organisations in Geneva. Later that yea
 r she was also accredited to the World Trade Organisation and then Ambassa
 dor to Switzerland. Ambassador Stevens served in these capacities until he
 r retirement in 2018. \nAs Ambassador\, she represented Sierra Leone as a 
 Member of the United Nations Human Rights Council from 2013 to 2015\, duri
 ng which she participated actively in the deliberations of the Council\, i
 ncluding the human rights of women and minorities\, as well as the prevent
 ion of human rights violations that might lead to instability and conflict
 s. \nAmbassador Stevens is currently an Executive in Residence at the Gene
 va Centre for Security Policy.
