 am qualified in medical sciences at the University of Cambridge and in cli
 nical medicine at the University of Oxford.  As an undergraduate\, he pub
 lished studies on lung function\, genetic polymorphisms\, endocrine functi
 on and demography in high altitude populations in Nepal.  After working a
 s a hospital physician for three years\, he carried out a PhD in viral imm
 unology at the National Institute for Medical Research and the University 
 of Oxford.  In 1995 he was appointed to the Chair of Immunology in Imperi
 al College on the St Mary’s campus\, a post created in 1960 for Rodney P
 orter\, who later received the Nobel Prize for identifying the structure o
 f immunoglobulin. He headed the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Dep
 artment of Medicine from 2011 to 2018\, and in 2019 he founded the Institu
 te of Infection in Imperial.  His research is on the immunology and virol
 ogy of persistent viral infections\, especially the human T cell leukaemia
  virus – the retrovirus HTLV-1.  Charles was elected a Fellow of the Ro
