Artificial intelligence

Improving the research standards for artificial intelligence in healthcare.
The collaborative research group on applied artificial intelligence in healthcare aims to explore the increased use of AI in health, building rigorous standards for evidence reporting.
Why are we researching artificial intelligence in healthcare?
Artificial intelligence is rapidly diffusing across healthcare, bringing with it dramatic changes in how we diagnose, treat and manage disease. From crunching data to spot signs of cancer, to smart sensors that can monitor patients’ vital signs, the potential applications of AI are far-reaching. And it’s here to stay.
Yet despite AI’s wide uptake and the accompanying streams of publications being churned out on its uses, currently there is no evidence-based best practice for reporting research findings concerning AI in healthcare. This hole means that researchers have adopted standards developed for traditional medical interventions like drugs, which aren’t fit for purpose.
It’s time for this new technology to have a tailored reporting system, which can help highlight both AI’s powerful benefits but also its risks. And that’s exactly where our work comes in.
What we do
The collaborative research group on applied artificial intelligence in healthcare was set up in 2018 to research and explore AI in healthcare.
Our short-term goal is to develop and showcase the most robust standards for reporting results from research into AI in health, developing best practice that can be universally adopted to help standardise methodology. In the long-term, our group seeks to better understand the issues around adopting AI from healthcare, societal and governmental perspectives, and to guide policy-makers on its uptake.
Who we are
Our group is led and chaired by Professor the Lord Ara Darzi, through the Institute of Global Health Innovation. Our work will be made possible through a collaboration of clinicians, scientists, policy-makers and industry colleagues from across the globe.
Our partners include Imperial College London, DeepMind, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Department of Health, the University of Cambridge and Harvard School of Public Health.
We will be looking to work with other thought leaders in the field of artificial intelligence and healthcare, together with other industries partners, as we take this work forward.
