Graduation ceremonies are formal occasions and therefore smart dress is appropriate.

Graduands are welcome to wear traditional or national dress.

Academic dress

The robes worn by graduates today have their origin in the everyday dress of the Middle Ages. The ancient universities in Europe began as communities of scholars and teachers associated with cathedrals or monasteries. As fashions changed, the cloaks of that period were retained by the universities and became the main item of academic dress.

Once you have received your invitation email and registered for the event, you can hire your gown from our supplier, Ede & Ravenscroft.

You can hire your gown online here. Academic dress can then be collected on the day in the Senior Common Room, Sherfield Building after ticket collection.

Academic dress is compulsory for Imperial College London's graduation ceremonies.

The deadline to place your order for Commemoration Day 2021 is 12 noon Friday 24 September.

On the day gown hire will not be available.
