Thermal Restoration Conversations

About this Challenge Team

The Thermal Restorations Conversations is a new challenge team that was created in November 2021. The motivation behind this challenge team is that thermal renovations, ranging from simply refitting old windows to installing heat pumps, can provide an effective way to address important issues such as energy poverty and climate change, yet seldom receive the attention they deserve.

The UK has some of the worst insulated and least energy efficient housing in Europe. Accounting for 32% of UK’s natural gas consumption, home heating is responsible for a significant proportion of the UK’s contribution to climate change (14%). Furthermore, 10,000 annual deaths and £1.3 bn in healthcare services could be prevented if energy and fuel poor homes had better heating. More details on the problems associated to thermally inefficient homes can be found here.

Our challenge team aims to start a conversation with different stakeholders, such as homeowners, students, and estate agents, about thermal renovations. Through this, we hope to achieve two things: first, we want to inform stakeholders about the economic, environmental, and social benefits of thermal renovations, and secondly, we want to understand what barriers they see in the way of investing in thermal renovations.

To do this, we will communicate with students living in student halls, as they are our most accessible stakeholders, and will be expanding to other stakeholders over time. We will try to maintain a back-and-forth conversation about the stakeholders’ views on and concerns about thermal renovations, consulting experts in the field each time the stakeholders have a question to bring them the best possible information. We hope that eventually, a tailored solution to improve each stakeholder’s thermal efficiency situation can be created, and that key barriers to action can be identified and communicated with the appropriate institutions.
