Pump priming initiatives aim to generate new capabilities and understanding at the College, supporting Affiliates in bringing together expertise across faculties and departments, together with external stakeholders, to develop novel, interdisciplinary research ideas.
The Institute will support up to three pump-priming awards per annum, offered primarily as six month Post Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) positions. Funds will only be available for direct costs associated with staff time, consumables or travel, up to a value of around £25,000 per award. Up to two of these awards will be reserved to support outcomes of capacity building workshops, with the remainder awarded through an open call.
We particularly welcome ideas within our priority themes in development, which include:
- Health, climate and other co-benefits
- Energy governance
- Climate change and water (adaptation)
- Strategic narratives
- Climate finance
- The circular economy
- Land use change and diets
- Negative emissions technology
- Behaviour change
- Extreme weather events
Where possible, projects should leverage other sources of funding to extend positions and research, for example through research council proposals. This should enable the area of research to be established beyond the initial support from the Institute. Succesful applicants are also expected to produce a clearly designed plan for further developing the area of research.
How to apply
Applicants are encouraged to discuss their ideas with the Institute prior to submitting a proposal, which will be reviewed by a panel convened by the Institute.
The first call for proposals is now closed.
