Search for heavy neutral and charged leptons in e+e- annihilation at √s = 161 and √s = 172 GeV
, Physics Letters Section B Nuclear Elementary Particle and High Energy Physics, Vol: 412, Pages: 189-200, ISSN: 0370-2693A search for unstable neutral and charged heavy leptons as well as for stable charged heavy leptons has been made at center-of-mass energies √s = 161 GeV and √s = 172 GeV with the L3 detector at LEP. No evidence for their existence was found. We exclude unstable neutral leptons of Dirac (Majorana) type for masses below 78.0 (66.7), 78.0 (66.7) and 72.2 (58.2) GeV, if the heavy neutrino couples to the electron, muon or tau family, respectively. We exclude unstable charged heavy leptons for masses below 81.0 GeV for a wide mass range of the associated neutral heavy lepton. The production of stable charged heavy leptons with a mass less than 84.2 GeV is also excluded. If the unstable charged heavy lepton decays via mixing into a massless neutrino, we exclude masses below 78.7 GeV. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Search for anomalous four-jet events in e+e- annihilation at √s = 130-172 GeV
, Physics Letters Section B Nuclear Elementary Particle and High Energy Physics, Vol: 411, Pages: 330-338, ISSN: 0370-2693A study of hadronic events with high jet-multiplicity is performed using the data sample collected by the L3 experiment at LEP at √s = 130-172 GeV. The observed event rates agree with the Standard Model predictions and upper limits are set on the production cross section of pairs of heavy particles that decay hadronically. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Study of photon dissociation in diffractive photoproduction at HERA
, Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields, Vol: 75, Pages: 421-435, ISSN: 0170-9739Diffractive dissociation of quasi–real photons at a photon–proton centre of mass energy ofW ≈ 200 GeV is studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The process under considerationis γp → XN, where X is the diffractively dissociated photon system of mass MX and N iseither a proton or a nucleonic system with mass MN < 2 GeV. The cross section for this processin the interval 3 < MX < 24 GeV relative to the total photoproduction cross section wasmeasured to be σpartialD /σtot = 6.2 ± 0.2(stat) ± 1.4(syst)%. After extrapolating this result tothe mass interval of m2φ < M2X < 0.05W2 and correcting it for proton dissociation, the fractionof the total cross section attributed to single diffractive photon dissociation, γp → Xp, is foundto be σSD/σtot = 13.3 ± 0.5(stat) ± 3.6(syst)%. The mass spectrum of the dissociated photonsystem in the interval 8 < MX < 24 GeV can be described by the triple pomeron (IP IP IP)diagram with an effective pomeron intercept of αIP (0) = 1.12 ± 0.04(stat) ± 0.08(syst). Thecross section for photon dissociation in the range 3 < MX < 8 GeV is significantly higher thanthat expected from the triple pomeron amplitude describing the region 8 < MX < 24 GeV.Assuming that this discrepancy is due to a pomeron–pomeron–reggeon (IP IP IR) term, its contributionto the diffractive cross section in the interval 3 < MX < 24 GeV is estimated to befIP IP IR = 26 ± 3(stat) ± 12(syst)%.

Measurement of the proton structure function F2 and σγ*ρ tot at low Q2 and very low x at HERA
, Physics Letters Section B Nuclear Elementary Particle and High Energy Physics, Vol: 407, Pages: 432-448, ISSN: 0370-2693A small electromagnetic sampling calorimeter, installed in the ZEUS experiment in 1995, significantly enhanced the acceptance for very low x and low Q2 inelastic neutral current scattering, e+p → e+X, at HERA. A measurement of the proton structure function F<inf>2</inf> and the total virtual photon-proton (γ*p) cross-section is presented for 0.11 ≤ Q2 ≤ 0.65 GeV2 and 2 × 10-6 ≤ x ≤ 6 × 10-5, corresponding to a range in the γ*p c.m. energy of 100 ≤ W ≤ 230 GeV. Comparisons with various models are also presented. © 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
