Study of photon dissociation in diffractive photoproduction at HERA
, Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields, Vol: 75, Pages: 421-435, ISSN: 0170-9739Diffractive dissociation of quasi–real photons at a photon–proton centre of mass energy ofW ≈ 200 GeV is studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The process under considerationis γp → XN, where X is the diffractively dissociated photon system of mass MX and N iseither a proton or a nucleonic system with mass MN < 2 GeV. The cross section for this processin the interval 3 < MX < 24 GeV relative to the total photoproduction cross section wasmeasured to be σpartialD /σtot = 6.2 ± 0.2(stat) ± 1.4(syst)%. After extrapolating this result tothe mass interval of m2φ < M2X < 0.05W2 and correcting it for proton dissociation, the fractionof the total cross section attributed to single diffractive photon dissociation, γp → Xp, is foundto be σSD/σtot = 13.3 ± 0.5(stat) ± 3.6(syst)%. The mass spectrum of the dissociated photonsystem in the interval 8 < MX < 24 GeV can be described by the triple pomeron (IP IP IP)diagram with an effective pomeron intercept of αIP (0) = 1.12 ± 0.04(stat) ± 0.08(syst). Thecross section for photon dissociation in the range 3 < MX < 8 GeV is significantly higher thanthat expected from the triple pomeron amplitude describing the region 8 < MX < 24 GeV.Assuming that this discrepancy is due to a pomeron–pomeron–reggeon (IP IP IR) term, its contributionto the diffractive cross section in the interval 3 < MX < 24 GeV is estimated to befIP IP IR = 26 ± 3(stat) ± 12(syst)%.

Measurement of the proton structure function F2 and σγ*ρ tot at low Q2 and very low x at HERA
, Physics Letters Section B Nuclear Elementary Particle and High Energy Physics, Vol: 407, Pages: 432-448, ISSN: 0370-2693A small electromagnetic sampling calorimeter, installed in the ZEUS experiment in 1995, significantly enhanced the acceptance for very low x and low Q2 inelastic neutral current scattering, e+p → e+X, at HERA. A measurement of the proton structure function F<inf>2</inf> and the total virtual photon-proton (γ*p) cross-section is presented for 0.11 ≤ Q2 ≤ 0.65 GeV2 and 2 × 10-6 ≤ x ≤ 6 × 10-5, corresponding to a range in the γ*p c.m. energy of 100 ≤ W ≤ 230 GeV. Comparisons with various models are also presented. © 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

QCD studies and determination of αs in e+e- collisions at √s = 161 GeV and 172 GeV L3 Collaboration
, Physics Letters Section B Nuclear Elementary Particle and High Energy Physics, Vol: 404, Pages: 390-402, ISSN: 0370-2693We present a study of the structure of hadronic events recorded by the L3 detector at LEP at the center of mass energies of 161 and 172 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 21.25 pb-1 collected during the high energy runs of 1996. The distributions of event shape variables and the energy dependence of their mean values are well reproduced by QCD models. From a comparison of the data with resummed script O sign (α2 <inf>s</inf>) QCD calculations, we determine the strong coupling constant at the two energies. Combining this with our earlier measurements we find that the strong coupling constant decreases with increasing energy as expected in QCD. © 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Absorption spectra of fiber light pipes made from pure quartz and irradiated by 60Co gamma quanta
, Pribory I Tekhnika Eksperimenta, Pages: 23-32, ISSN: 0032-8162The aim of the paper is to study the radiation resistance of quartz fiber light pipes as an active medium of a front calorimeter in future collider experiments. The absorption spectra of different types of quartz fiber light pipes in the wave length range from 200 to 700 nm, irradiated by gamma quanta at the integral dose from 10 to 1000 Mrad, are measured. It is established that there is the spectral range with minimum growth of optical losses when increasing the absorbed dose. It is found also that increasing the dose above 57 Mrad is accompanied by not only increase optical losses but and destruction of the polymer shell of a fiber light pipe.
