Observation of Y production in hadronic Z0 decays
, Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics, Vol: 370, Pages: 185-194, ISSN: 0370-2693Evidence for the production of Y mesons in hadronic Z0 decays is presented. Using a sample of 3.7 million hadronic events, eight Y candidates are identified from their decays into e+e- and μ+μ- pairs. The estimated background in the signal region is 1.6 ± 0.3 events. Based on existing theoretical models for inclusive Y production, the following branching ratio, summed over the three lightest Y states, is obtained: Br(Z0 → Y + X) = (1.0 ± 0.4 ± 0.1 ± 0.2) × 10-4, where the first error is statistical, the second systematic and the third error accounts for uncertainties in the production mechanism.

Measurement of the τ- → e-v̄<inf>c</inf>vτ branching ratio
, Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics, Vol: 369, Pages: 163-172, ISSN: 0370-2693The branching ratio of the τ- → e-v̄evτ decay mode has been measured with the OPAL detector to be (17.78 ± 0.10 ±0.09)% where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The branching ratio, together with other measurements, has been used to test e - μ and μ - τ universality in the charged current weak interaction.

Determination of
, Zeitschrift fur Physik C-Particles and Fields, Vol: 71, Pages: 539-553, ISSN: 0170-9739Semileptonic decays B → D*- ℓ+νX were selected from a sample of 3.1 million hadronic Z decays collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP. A topological search for semileptonic B decays to resonant and non-resonant D*- π+ states was performed and the ratio of the branching fractions: Br(B → D*- ℓ+νX)/Br(B → D*- ℓ+νX) + Br(B0 → D*- ℓ+ν) = 0.19 ± 0.10(stat) ± 0.06(syst) was determined. Taking into account this contribution, the differential decay width of B0 → D*- ℓ+ν was measured as a function of the momentum transfer from the B to the D*- in two separate analyses, using exclusive and inclusive methods of D*- ℓ+ reconstruction. The distributions were fitted over the full momentum transfer range to extract the product of |V cb| times the normalization of the decay form factor F(q max2): F(qmax2)|Vcb| = (35.4 ± 1.9(stat) ± 2.4(syst)) • 10-3. The value of |Vcb| was computed using theoretical calculations of F(q max2), giving: |Vcb| = (38.9 ± 2.0(stat) ± 2.6(syst) ± 1.7(theory)) • 10-3. The total branching fraction Br(B0 → D*- ℓ+ν) was determined to be: Br(B0 → D*- ℓ+ν) = (5.52 ± 0.17(stat) ± 0.68(syst))%.

Measurement of the partial decay width R<inf>b</inf>0 = Γ<inf>bb̄</inf>/Γ<inf>had</inf> of the Z with the DELPHI detector at LEP
, Zeitschrift fur Physik C-Particles and Fields, Vol: 70, Pages: 531-547, ISSN: 0170-9739The partial decay width of the Z to bb̄ quark pairs has been measured by the DELPHI detector at LEP. B-hadrons, containing b-quarks, were tagged by several methods using tracks with large impact parameters to the primary vertex complemented sometimes by event shape variables or using leptons with high transverse momentum relative to the hadron. In order to reduce the systematic uncertainties, in all methods the b-tagging efficiency has been extracted directly from the data. Combining all methods, the value: Γbb̄/Γhad = 0.2216 ± 0.0016(stat.) ± 0.0021(syst.) was found, where the cc̄ production fraction was fixed to its Standard Model value. © Springer-Verlag 1996.

Measurement of the average b-baryon lifetime and the product branching ratio f(b → Λ<inf>b</inf>) · BR(Λ<inf>b</inf> → Λℓ-ν̄X)
, Zeitschrift fur Physik C-Particles and Fields, Vol: 69, Pages: 195-214, ISSN: 0170-9739The average lifetime of b-flavoured baryons measured with the OPAL detector is updated to include data collected between 1990 and 1994 at LEP. Bottom-flavoured baryons that decay semileptonically and produce a Λ baryon are identified through the correlation of the baryon number of the Λ and the electric charge of the lepton. To measure the lifetime, the decay point of the b baryon is estimated by the Λ-lepton vertex, and the observed distribution of decay lengths is fitted simultaneously in 874 right-sign and 384 wrong-sign combinations. In a separate method, the impact parameter distribution of the leptons is fitted in a subset of these data. When the two results are combined, taking correlations into account, the average b-baryon lifetime is found to be τ = 1.16 ± 0.11 (stat.) ± 0.06 (syst.) ps. Using the same data, the product branching ratio is measured to be f(b → Δb)·BR(Λb → Λℓ-ν̄X) = (2.91 ± 0.23 (stat.) ±0.25 (syst.))·10-3, where the symbol f(b → Λb) is the fraction of b quarks from Z0 decays forming b baryons, Λb represents all b-flavoured baryons and ℓ is either an electron or a muon. © Springer-Verlag 1996.

Determination of the gluon distribution function of the nucleon using energy-energy angular pattern in deep-inelastic muon-deuteron scattering
, Zeitschrift fur Physik C-Particles and Fields, Vol: 71, Pages: 391-403, ISSN: 0170-9739We have used the energy-energy angular pattern of hadrons in inelastic muon-deuteron scattering to study perturbative QCD effects and to extract the gluon distribution function ηG(η) of the nucleon, where η is the fractional momentum carried by the gluon. The data were taken with the E665 spectrometer using the Fermilab Tevatron muon beam with a mean beam energy of 490 GeV. We present ηG(η) for 0.005 < η < 0.05 and at an average Q2 of 8 GeV2 using this new technique. We find that ηG(η) in this region can be described by ηG(η) ∝ ηλ with λ = -0.87±0.09(stat.)±0.370.32(sys.). We compare our results to expectations from various parametrizations of the parton distribution function and also to results from HERA. © Springer-Verlag 1996.

New dark matter limits from the Boulby NaI detectors
, Nuclear Physics B - Proceedings Supplements, Vol: 19, Pages: 64-66, ISSN: 0920-5632Using pulse shape analysis of data from 173 operating days of our 6.2 kg NaI detector in the energy range 7-10 keV we present new limits on weakly interacting massive particles that may constitute the dark matter. An improvement of a factor >30 has been obtained over Ge for spin-dependent dark matter interactions while limits for coherent interactions are comparable to Ge for masses > 100 GeV.
