Observation of the D*0(2459) IN e+e- annihilation
, Physics Letters B, Vol: 221, Pages: 422-426, ISSN: 0370-2693Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY, we have observed a charmed meson of mass (2455±3±5) MeV/c2, decaying to D+π-. The natural width of this state is determined to be (15+13+5-10-10) MeV c2. The fragmentation function is hard, as expected for a leading charmed particle from nonresonant e+e- annihilation. Analysis of the decay angular distribution supports the hypothesis that the observed state is an L=1 excited charmed meson with spin-parity 2+. © 1989.

Measurement of D*+ polarization in the decay B ̄0 → D*+ℓ-ν
, Physics Letters B, Vol: 219, Pages: 121-126, ISSN: 0370-2693Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II, we have measured the average polarization of D*+ mesons originating from exclusive decays B ̄0 → D*+ℓ-ν. By comparing the D*+ decay angular distribution to a functional form 1 + α cos2≡, we determine α to be α=0.7±0.9. This value of α leads to a ratio of longitudinal to transverse decay with Γl/ΓT=0.85±0.45, which allows the determination, |Vcb|=0.052±0.011. The importance of the transverse helicity component is manifested in the q2 and lepton spectra,which are also presented. © 1989.

Argus: A universal detector at DORIS II
, Nuclear Inst. and Methods in Physics Research, A, Vol: 275, Pages: 1-48, ISSN: 0168-9002The detector ARGUS has been designed as a universal tool to investigate final states from e+e- annihilation processes in the energy range of the Υ{hooked} resonances. ARGUS started operation in October 1982 and has since successfully taken data at the Υ{hooked}(1S), Υ{hooked}(2S) and Υ{hooked}(4S) energies, and in the nearby continuum. The detector combines excellent charged particle identification and good photon energy resolution over more than 90% of the full solid angle. A particle originating from the interaction vertex and leaving the beam tube traverses the following components: the vertex drift chamber, the main drift chamber which determines its momentum and specific ionization, the time-of-flight system through which its velocity is determined, and the electromagnetic calorimeter. Muons pass through the magnet coils and the flux return yoke and finally hit the muon chamber system which surrounds the detector. The momentum resolution of ARGUS is σ (pT) PT = (0.012 + (0.009pT[GeV/c])2) 1 2, the photon energy resolution in the barrel shower counters is σ (E) E = ( 0.0722+0.0652 E[GeV]) 1 2. Combining the information from all p devices, more than 80% of all charged hadrons can be recognized unambiguously. The electron-hadron and muon-hadron rejection rates are 1:200 and 1:50 respectively. © 1989.

Measurement of D<sup>0</sup> decays into {Mathematical expression}, {Mathematical expression} and {Mathematical expression}
, Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields, Vol: 43, Pages: 181-184, ISSN: 0170-9739Using the ARGUS detector at the electron-positron storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have measured the branching ratios of the D0 meson decays into {Mathematical expression}, {Mathematical expression} and {Mathematical expression} relative to the K-π+ mode. Using the known branching ratio Br(D0→Kπ+)=(4.2±0.4±0.4)% we find {Mathematical expression} (90% CL) and {Mathematical expression} (90% CL). © 1989 Springer-Verlag.

Studies of intermediate vector boson production and decay in UA1 at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
, Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields, Vol: 44, Pages: 15-61, ISSN: 0170-9739An extensive study of production and decay properties of charged and neutral Intermediate Vector Bosons (IVB) at the CERN proton-antiproton collider is presented. Intermediate Vector Bosons were detected in the electron, muon, and tau decay modes at centre-of-mass energies of 0.546 and 0.630 TeV. This paper is a summary, based on all the available data from the UA1 experiment from the running periods 1982-1985. Results are presented and compared with expectations of the Standard Eletroweak Model and QCD-improved Drell-Yan annihilation processes. The general conclusion is that there is an excellent agreement between the predictions of the Standard Model and our measurements. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.

Search for exclusive radiative decays of Υ{hooked}(1 S) and Υ{hooked}(2 S) mesons
, Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields, Vol: 42, Pages: 349-354, ISSN: 0170-9739Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring we have searched for radiative decays Υ(1 S)→γX, where X decays into two oppositely charged pions, kaons, or protons. Upper limits on branching fractions are presented. In the π+π- invariant mass region 290-570 MeV/c2 the upper limit obtained varies from 3 to 4.5×10-5. These values are lower than the theoretical prediction of about 5×10-5 for Higgs production, which includes perturbative QCD radiative corrections to the Wilczek formula and the estimate Br(H0→π+π-), accounting for Higgs coupling to gluons via heavy quark loops. Previous experimental results do not exclude the existence of a standard minimal Higgs in this mass region. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.

Results on baryon antibaryon correlations in e + e --annihilation
, Zeitschrift für Physik C: Particles and Fields, Vol: 43, Pages: 45-53, ISSN: 0170-9739The correlations between p {Mathematical expression}, {Mathematical expression}, {Mathematical expression} and {Mathematical expression} baryons have been measured in e + e - continuum events and in direct Ψ decays. The observed correlations exclude the production of point-like diquark-antidiquark pairs as the dominant source of baryons. Information concerning angular momentum compensation follows from the observed {Mathematical expression} correlation. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.

Two-photon production of final states with a p {Mathematical expression} pair
, Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields, Vol: 42, Pages: 543-548, ISSN: 0170-9739Two-photon production of the exclusive final states p {Mathematical expression}+nπ (n=0, 1, 2, and 3) has been investigated using the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II at DESY. The reactions γγ→p {Mathematical expression}π and γγ→p {Mathematical expression}π+π-π0 have been observed for the first time, as have the Δ++ and {Mathematical expression} baryons in the final state p {Mathematical expression}π+π-. No evidence was found for Δ++ {Mathematical expression} production. Topological cross sections for two-photon production of p {Mathematical expression}, p {Mathematical expression}π0, p {Mathematical expression}π+π- and p {Mathematical expression}π+π-π0, as well as the crosssection for γγ→Δ++ {Mathematical expression}π+π-+c.c., have been measured. Upper limits are given for the cross section for γγ→Δ0 {Mathematical expression}, γγ→Δ++ {Mathematical expression} and γγ→Λ {Mathematical expression}. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.

Inclusive production of charged pions, charged and neutral kaons and antiprotons in e+e- annihilation at 10 GeV and in direct Upsilon decays
, Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields, Vol: 44, Pages: 547-555, ISSN: 0170-9739Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II, we have investigated inclusive production of π±, K±, Ks0 and {Mathematical expression} in multihadron events at 9.98 GeV and in direct decays of the Υ{hooked}(1 S) meson, i.e. from quark and gluon fragmentation. The most pronounced difference is the rate of baryon production. The Lund Monte Carlo program gives a reasonable qualitative description, although it cannot reproduce our data in detail. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.

Measurement of inclusive B meson decays into baryons
, Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields, Vol: 42, Pages: 519-525, ISSN: 0170-9739The decay of B mesons into the baryons p, Λ and Ξ- has been studied. The measured inclusive branching ratios for these decays are Br(B→p X) =(8.2±0.5-1.0+1.3)%, Br(B→ΛX)=(4.2±0.5±0.6)% and Br(B→Ξ-X)<0.51% at the 90% confidence level. In addition investigations on p {Mathematical expression}, and Λ {Mathematical expression} and Λ {Mathematical expression} correlations were performed, yielding an approximately equal rate of protons and neutrons. From this one can derive a total baryonic branching ratio Br(B→baryons) of (7.6±1.4)%. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.

Inclusive φ{symbol}-meson production in electron-positron interactions in the energy region of the Υ{hooked}-resonances
, Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields, Vol: 41, Pages: 557-566, ISSN: 0170-9739We report on a high precision measurement of φ{symbol}-meson production in continuum events and in direct decays of the Υ(1 S)- and Υ(2 S)-mesons. The ratio of the total production rate of φ{symbol}-mesons in direct Υ(1 S)- and Υ(2 S)-decays over that in continuum events is 1.32±0.08±0.09 and 1.07±0.13±0.11 respectively. This is compatible with the corresponding ratio obtained for lighter mesons, but is appreciably smaller than the relative baryon production rate. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.
