Measurement of the lifetime ratio τ(B=) τ(B0)
, Physics Letters B, Vol: 232, Pages: 554-560, ISSN: 0370-2693Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II the ratio of semileptonic branching ratios of B+ and B0 mesons has been determined by comparing the yields of D0, D-, and D*(2010)- mesons in semileptonic B decays. We derive the lifetime ratio τ(B+) τ(B0)=1.00∓0.23±0.14. © 1989.

Resonance decomposition of the D*(2420)0 through a decay angular analysis
, Physics Letters B, Vol: 232, Pages: 398-404, ISSN: 0370-2693Using data collected with the ARGUS detector, we have performed a decay angular analysis of the enhancement, previously known as the D* (2420), seen in the final state D*(2010)+π-. We thereby exhibit that the observed broad structure is actually due to two relatively narrow resonances, one of which is identified as the D*(2459)0, while the massof the other is measured to be (2414±2±5) MeV/c2. The results of the analysis are in good agreement with the interpretation of the two states as L=1 D mesons of spin-parities 2+ and 1+ respectively. © 1989.

Observation of the charged isospin partner of the D*(2459)0
, Physics Letters B, Vol: 231, Pages: 208-212, ISSN: 0370-2693Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e- storage ring at DESY, we have observed a new charmed meson of mass (2469±4±6) MeV/c2, decaying to D0π+. This state is a strong candidate for the charged isospin partner of the D*(2459)0 . The isospin mass splitting is measured to be (14±5±8) MeV/c2. © 1989.

Observation of a new charmed-strange meson
, Physics Letters B, Vol: 230, Pages: 162-168, ISSN: 0370-2693Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e- storage ring at DESY, we have obtained evidence for a new charmed-strange meson which decays into D*+K0. Its mass is observed to be 2535.9±0.6±2.0 MeV/c2 and its width to be less than 4.6 MeV/c2 at the 90% confidence level. No structure is observed at this mass in the D+K0 invariant mass spectrum, which suggests that an unnatural spin-parity is preferred. © 1989.

Observation of Δ(1232)++ production in e+e- annihilations around 10 GeV
, Physics Letters B, Vol: 230, Pages: 169-174, ISSN: 0370-2693We report on the first observation of Δ(1232)++ and Δ(1232)++ baryons in e+e- annihilation at energies around 10 GeV, using the ARGUS detector at DORIS II. The sum of the rates of Δ++ and Δ++ per hadronic event in the continuum is measured to be 0.040±0.008±0.006, and the rate in direct {A figure is presented}(1S) decays is 0.124±0.016±0.015. The momentum spectrum of Δ++ baryons in direct {A figure is presented}(1S) decays has been measured. © 1989.

Search for b→sγ in exclusive decays of B mesons
, Physics Letters B, Vol: 229, Pages: 304-308, ISSN: 0370-2693Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II at DESY, a search for decays B→K*γ has been performed where K* represents seven different K mesons. No evidence for such decays has been found, and upper limits are quoted. These provide valuable constraints on the top quark mass, the Higgs sector of the standard model, and a variety of extensions thereto. © 1989.

Measurement of the decay B0→D-ℓ+ν
, Physics Letters B, Vol: 229, Pages: 175-180, ISSN: 0370-2693Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II, we have investigated the decay B0→D-ℓ+ν, where ℓ+ is e+ or μ+. The B0 mesons were produced in 150 000 Υ{hooked}(4S) decays. Assuming electron-muon universality we obtain a branching ratio BR(B0→D-e+ν)=BR(B0 →D-μ+ν)=(1.8±0.6±0.5)%. © 1989.

Observation of the D*0(2459) IN e+e- annihilation
, Physics Letters B, Vol: 221, Pages: 422-426, ISSN: 0370-2693Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY, we have observed a charmed meson of mass (2455±3±5) MeV/c2, decaying to D+π-. The natural width of this state is determined to be (15+13+5<inf>-10-10</inf>) MeV c2. The fragmentation function is hard, as expected for a leading charmed particle from nonresonant e+e- annihilation. Analysis of the decay angular distribution supports the hypothesis that the observed state is an L=1 excited charmed meson with spin-parity 2+. © 1989.

Measurement of D*+ polarization in the decay B ̄0 → D*+ℓ-ν
, Physics Letters B, Vol: 219, Pages: 121-126, ISSN: 0370-2693Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II, we have measured the average polarization of D*+ mesons originating from exclusive decays B ̄0 → D*+ℓ-ν. By comparing the D*+ decay angular distribution to a functional form 1 + α cos2≡, we determine α to be α=0.7±0.9. This value of α leads to a ratio of longitudinal to transverse decay with Γ<inf>l</inf>/Γ<inf>T</inf>=0.85±0.45, which allows the determination, |V<inf>cb</inf>|=0.052±0.011. The importance of the transverse helicity component is manifested in the q2 and lepton spectra, which are also presented. © 1989.

Argus: A universal detector at DORIS II
, Nuclear Inst and Methods in Physics Research A, Vol: 275, Pages: 1-48, ISSN: 0168-9002The detector ARGUS has been designed as a universal tool to investigate final states from e+e- annihilation processes in the energy range of the Υ{hooked} resonances. ARGUS started operation in October 1982 and has since successfully taken data at the Υ{hooked}(1S), Υ{hooked}(2S) and Υ{hooked}(4S) energies, and in the nearby continuum. The detector combines excellent charged particle identification and good photon energy resolution over more than 90% of the full solid angle. A particle originating from the interaction vertex and leaving the beam tube traverses the following components: the vertex drift chamber, the main drift chamber which determines its momentum and specific ionization, the time-of-flight system through which its velocity is determined, and the electromagnetic calorimeter. Muons pass through the magnet coils and the flux return yoke and finally hit the muon chamber system which surrounds the detector. The momentum resolution of ARGUS is σ (p<inf>T</inf>) P<inf>T</inf> = (0.012 + (0.009p<inf>T</inf>[GeV/c])2) 1 2, the photon energy resolution in the barrel shower counters is σ (E) E = ( 0.0722+0.0652 E[GeV]) 1 2. Combining the information from all p devices, more than 80% of all charged hadrons can be recognized unambiguously. The electron-hadron and muon-hadron rejection rates are 1:200 and 1:50 respectively. © 1989.
