    Performance of a uranium/tetramethylpentane calorimeter backed by an iron/scintillator calorimeter

    We present results from the barrel depleted uranium/TMP calorimeter modules constructed by the UA1 Collaboration. Electromagnetic and hadronic energy resolutions have been measured using electron and pion beams with momenta in the range 7 to 70 GeV/c. Results on the energy linearity and the spatial uniformity of response are reported. The electromagnetic shower position resolution has been measured as a function of energy using a fine grained position detector placed at a depth of - 3.5χ<inf>0</inf>. The noise arising both from the electronics chain and from the uranium radioactivity is compared with 70 GeV/c muon signals. The ratio of the electron to pion response has been measured both as a function of the energy and of the electric field. The high lateral and longitudinal granularity of the calorimeter and the presence of a position detector have been used to determine the electron pion separation as a function of energy. © 1991.

    Separation of minimum and higher twist in photoproduction of high-PT mesons

    Photo- and hadroproduction data in the beam energy range 65-175 GeV have been studied with a view to isolating higher-twist processes in photoproduction from other point-like and hadron-like contributions. With selection of charged tracks having p<inf>T</inf>>2 GeV/c and 0.28<x<inf>F</inf><0.84 indications of a higher twist contribution have been found at a level that is consistent with QCD expectations. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

    Observation of the decay τ → ϱππντ

    An analysis of the decay τ<sup>-</sup> → π<sup>-</sup>π<sup>-</sup>π<sup>+</sup>π<sup>0</sup>ν <inf>τ</inf> has been performed with the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. From a study of the two pion subsystems we have found first evidence for the decays τ<sup>-</sup> → ρ{variant}<sup>0</sup>π<sup>-</sup>π<sup>0</sup>ν<inf>τ </inf>, τ<sup>-</sup> → ρ{variant}<sup> -</sup>π<sup>+</sup>π<sup>-</sup>ν<inf>τ</inf>, and τ<sup>-</sup> → ρ{variant}<sup>+</sup>π<sup>-</sup>π<sup>-</sup>ν<inf>τ </inf> with relative contributions to the decay τ<sup>-</sup> → π<sup>-</sup>π<sup>-</sup>π<sup>+</sup>π<sup>0</sup>ν <inf>τ</inf> of 0.30 ± 0.04, 0.26 ± 0.05, and 0.10 ± 0.03, respectively. The fraction of the subchannel τ<sup>-</sup> → ωπ<sup>-</sup>ν<inf>τ</inf> has been determined to be 0.33 ± 0.05. The production of ρ{variant} mesons is enhanced by a factor of 1.9 ± 0.3 over that of ω mesons. We conclude that in more than 81% (95% CL) of all τ<sup>-</sup> → π<sup>-</sup>π<sup>-</sup>π<sup>+</sup>π<sup>0</sup>ν <inf>τ</inf> decays either a ρ{variant} or ω meson is produced. © 1991.

    Branching ratios and properties of D-meson decays

    Properties of D mesons produced in the photo-production experiment NA 14/2 at CERN are reported. The following ratios of branching fractions were measured: {Mathematical expression}. The D<sup>0</sup>→K<sup>-</sup>π<sup>+</sup>π<sup>+</sup>π<sup>-</sup> decay was analysed and the contribution of resonant subprocesses found consistent with 1 ρ<sup>0</sup> and 0.23 {Mathematical expression}<sup>*0</sup> per event. The angular distributions of D<sup>0</sup>→ {Mathematical expression}<sup>*0</sup> showed parity violation and destructive interference between S- and D-waves. From a Dalitz-plot analysis of the decay D<sup>+</sup>→K<sup>-</sup>π<sup>+</sup>π<sup>+</sup> the contribution from the quasi two-body decay D<sup>+</sup>→ {Mathematical expression}<sup>*0</sup>π<sup>+</sup> was measured to be 0.14±0.04±0.04. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

    J/ψ and ψ′ production at the CERN p̄p collider

    We have measured the production cross-section times branching ratio for J/ψ→μ<sup>+</sup>μ<sup>-</sup> in pp̄ interactions at √s = 630 GeV in the kinematic range |y|<2.0 and p<inf>T</inf>>5 GeV/c, BR(J/ψ→μ<sup>+</sup>μ<sup>-</sup>)σ(p p ̄→J/ψ)=6.18±0.24±0.81 nb. The data sample collected in 1988 and 1989 for an integrated luminosity of 4.7 pb<sup>-1</sup> represents a fivefold improvement over the statistics in our earlier study of the J/ψ production process, and the p<inf>T</inf> distribution which is measured extends to 28 GeV/c. Using event topology we show that the rate for the direct production of J/ψ, via radiative decays of χ states, is larger than that for production via B-hadrons. Production of ψ′ is also studied using the decay modes <ψ′→μ<sup>+</sup>μ<sup>-</sup> and ψ′→J/ψπ<sup>+</sup>ψ<sup>-</sup>. © 1991.

    Results concerning the decay Ds ±→η′π±

    A search for the decay D<inf>s</inf> <sup>+</sup>→η′π<sup>+</sup>;η′ →ρ{variant}γ has been performed by the NA14/2 photoproduction experiment at CERN. A signal compatible with the D<inf>s</inf> <sup>+</sup> has been observed, leading to a ratio of branching fractions of Br(D<inf>s</inf> <sup>+</sup>→η′π<sup>+</sup>) Br(D<inf>s<sup>+</sup>→φπ<sup>+</sup>)=2.5±1.0<inf>-0 .4</inf> <sup>+1.5</sup> </inf>. A value of Br(D<sup>+</sup>→η′π<sup>+</sup>) Br(D<sup>+</sup>→K<sup>-</sup>π<sup>+</sup>π<sup>+</sup>)< 0.1 is set at 90% CL. © 1991.

    Measurement of the ratio R≡σWBr(W→μν)/σzBr (Z→μμ) and ΓWtot at the CERN proton-antiproton collider

    An analysis of W and Z boson production at UA1, using 4.66 pb<sup>-1</sup> of data from the 1988 and 1989 CERN pp Collider runs at s=0.63 TeV, yields R≡σ<inf>W</inf>Br(W→μv)/σ<inf>z</inf>Br (Z→μμ)=10.4<inf>-1.5</inf><sup>+1.8</sup>stat.± 0.8(syst.) We find R=9.5<inf>-1.0</inf><sup>+1.1</sup>(stat.+syst.) when combining all available UA1 data, in both the electron and muon channel, taken in the period 1983-1989. In the framework of the standard model, the value of R is used to infer the total width of the W boson, Γ<inf>W</inf><sup>tot</sup>=2.18<inf>-0.24</inf><sup>+0.26</sup> (exp.)±0.04(theory) GeV/c<sup>2</sup>. © 1991.

    Observation of spin-parity 2+ dominance in the reaction γγ→ρ0ρ0 near threshold

    The reaction γγ→π<sup>+</sup>π<sup>-</sup>π<sup>+</sup>π<sup>-</sup> has been studied with the ARGUS detector. The rate in the invariant mass region below 1.8 GeV/c<sup>2</sup> is found to be largely due to ρ<sup>0</sup>ρ<sup>0</sup> production. A spin-parity analysis shows a dominance of the partial wave (J<sup>P</sup>, J<inf>z</inf>)=(2<sup>+</sup>, 2) with a small admixture from J<sup>P</sup>=0<sup>+</sup>. The contribution of negative parity states is consistent with zero. The large ratio of cross sections σ(γγ→ρ<sup>0</sup>ρ<sup>0</sup>)/σ(γγ→ρ<sup>+</sup>ρ<sup>-</sup>)≃4, and the dominance of the J<sup>P</sup>=2<sup>+</sup> wave in the reaction γγ→ρ<sup>0</sup>ρ<sup>0</sup> is a signature consistent with the production of an exotic (I=2) resonance. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.
