Exams and assessment
Forms of assessment
Imperial Horizons modules are assessed in many different ways depending of the type of module. Details of assessment can be found on your module description and assessment deadlines will appear on blackboard.
Please note that all assessments are compulsory for all students (including those registered for extra-credit or non-credit).
A student who fails to attend an exam or submit an assessment without a valid reason will fail the entire module without having the option of a resit. (If you are taking the module for extra-credit or non-credit a fail will not be recorded on your transcript.)
If you have extenuating circumstances (i.e. documented illness or a serious personal problem) which mean you are unable to attend a written exam, please contact the Examinations Officer.
For coursework extensions, please complete the relevant extension form.
Languages modules have exams on the last Monday and Tuesday of the Spring term from 16.00-18.00.
Please note that all groups of the same language will take place on the same day. This may not be the same day as your normal class.
Please see the allocated day for your language below: -
Monday (16.00-18.00): German, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, Italian (all levels)
Tuesday (16.00-18.00): French, Spanish, Mandarin, Korean (all levels)
Some Humanities & Social Sciences modules also have exams. Please check your module description for more details on how your module is assessed. Humanities & Social Sciences exams normally take place in the last class of the Spring term.
Languages Oral Exams
Language Oral exams are scheduled at the end of the spring term and at the beginning of the summer term. You will be contacted by the coordinator for your language to arrange a suitable time for your oral exam.
When you come to your oral exam, please make sure you bring all your coursework in an unsealed A4 envelope with your name, CID number, your language course and language lecturer’s name written on the front. There will be an opportunity to collect your coursework from the Centre for Languages, Culture & Communication after the exam board meeting has taken place in mid-June and before the end of the summer term.
Guidelines for requesting an oral exam reschedule
If you need to reschedule your oral exam more than a week in advance
Try and swap with a colleague in your class, if this is not possible contact the relevant language coordinator who will offer you a free slot if available. If you manage to swap with a colleague, please ensure you notify your lecturer and firstname.lastname@example.org of the change.
If you need to reschedule your oral exam less than a week in advance or if you cannot attend
You must give a valid reason for a reschedule to be permitted i.e. illness/funeral/ another exam/hospital appointment. NB Reasons such as pressure of work, an impending deadline, a clash with a lecture, labs, oversleeping or forgetting the date are not acceptable. Exams take precedence. Evidence of the valid reason may be requested. If no valid reason is given, no further opportunity to take the oral exam will be offered. This will lead to you failing the course or being withdrawn and could affect your final grade for the year if you are taking your Horizons course for degree credit.
Please note that you need to take both the oral and written exams in order to pass the module.
A re-sit exam session will be offered only to those who meet the exam regulations criteria.
The re-sit date for written exams is: Wednesday 4 September 2019 at 14.00
Please contact the Exams Officer, Melanie Mullin with any queries.
