Wearable protection such as motorcycle and cycle helmets have not kept up with the pace of advanced materials and manufacturing. Our research has shown that advanced materials such as viscoelastic polymers and novel hierarchical lattice structures can better protect the brain from high strain and strain rates which correlate with head injury such as Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) than current methods that nonetheless pass outdated helmet testing standards. Our research in design and development of novel topologies with advanced materials partnership with TUM is advancing frontiers of wearable protection technology. The work involves extensive testing and charactarisation of these structures at large strains and a range of quasi-static and dynamic strain-rates.
