What did you do before joining the training scheme?
Before the management training scheme I studied for a BSc in Biomedical Sciences. During my degree I completed a placement year in a pharmaceutical lab with AstraZeneca. During my final year at university I worked with the Admissions Team as a Senior Ambassador, which gave me some insight into working in the HE sector.
What attracted you to the scheme?
I knew that I wanted to work in the public sector and I was attracted to this scheme because of the massively broad range of things that you could be working on. Before starting the scheme I wasn’t sure which area of the industry I would enjoy the most, so wanted to experience as many areas as possible to gain a wide understanding of the university and clearer idea of what I wanted to do in the future. I was also attracted to the scheme’s focus on professional development, there are loads of opportunities to go on internal and external courses, which I think is really important at the start of a career.
What are your highlights so far based on your time on the scheme so far?
The highlight for me so far was the exposure to business and the start-up ecosystem during my placement in Enterprise. This wasn’t something that I was knowledgeable about prior to the placement but it was amazing to learn about and work with business accelerator initiatives and commercial partnerships while in this team. Before starting the scheme, I wouldn’t have thought that this would be an area of interest for me but it was really inspiring and something I might like to come back to in the future. During this placement I also led on the operational management of a successful launch event for one of these programmes, it was great to have ownership on a big project like this.
What would be your one tip for applicants?
Try to be yourself during the assessment day, the day is fairly relaxed and a good opportunity to learn more about the scheme so don’t be afraid to ask questions!
