Job summary

Applicants are invited for the position of research associate in the Dyson School of Design Engineering to work on the Community Jameel and Imperial College London Excellence Fund project; titled Automated design-through-manufacture pipeline for mass-customisation of frontline respiratory PPE. The project will develop a novel design processes for respiratory masks to combat COVID19. The role holder will be tasked with developing custom software, parametric scripted CAD models and development of 3D printed respirator mask. The role is part of a wider team effort including phd students and clincians. The role holder will have direct input on project outcomes. It is expected that the role holder will work towards generating research outputs suitable for academic publications, attendance to project meetings and communications with various stakeholders.

Duties and responsibilities

· To develop parametric CAD models of a respirator mask either via CAD packages or custom code
· To develop custom software using general-purpose programming languages
· To work with internal and external project partners
· To take initiatives in the planning of research
· To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times
· To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings
· To write reports for submission to research sponsors
· To present findings to colleagues and at conferences
· To submit publications to refereed journals
· To provide guidance to staff and students

Essential requirements

· PhD or Masters Degree in Physical Science or Engineering or a closely related
discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience

· Practical experience within a research environment


· Practical experience in developing parametric CAD models either via CAD packages or
custom code


· Practical experience in developing, and using, 3D printing technology


· Practical experience in using general-purpose programming languages
