The Mechanics of Infrastructure Materials research group are looking to hire a Research Associate in Experimental Testing of Hydrogen Embrittlement and Stress Corrosion Cracking to work in the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project NEWPHASE. The project, led by Dr Emilio Martínez-Pañeda, aims at gaining insight into electro-chemo-mechanical interfacial challenges in materials engineering. One of these challenges is the interaction between metallic materials and aggressive environments, often resulting in failures that are driven by the uptake of hydrogen or localised corrosion reactions. There is a need to develop new testing procedures that can shed new light into hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion cracking phenomena. The PDRA will have access to state-of-the-art equipment for characterising the susceptibility of metals to hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion damage, from both mechanical and electrochemical perspectives. The initial term will be one year, with the potential to extend the appointment for 2-3 years based on performance and availability of funding. The starting date is relatively flexible, with a preference for the period January-March 2022.
Duties and responsibilities
You will be responsible for conducting a wide variety of experimental tasks, including (but not limited to) mechanical testing, hydrogen electro-permeation, electrochemical charging, thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), SEM and XCT characterisation, Tafel, and impedance spectroscopy. You will also be expected to take part in collaborative work, take part in the activities of the research group, submit publications to reputed journals and liaise with academic collaborators and sponsors.
You must have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD in Materials Science, Mechanics of Materials or a related subject. Also, you should have experience in at least one of the following:
- Mechanical testing
- Environmentally assisted fracture testing
- Temperature-programmed hydrogen desorption
- Materials characterisation (SEM, XCT)
- Electrochemical testing
- Coupled deformation-diffusion modelling

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 - £39,888 per annum.
