Job description

Job summary

The CSM group are inviting applications for a Research Associate position in computational structural mechanics and structural engineering to work on detailed modelling and nonlinear analysis of masonry viaducts within a research project funded by Network Rail.

A number of under-line masonry viaducts are suffering progressive damage, which is reducing the serviceability of these structures. The aim of this project is to improve understanding of viaduct behaviour under traffic loading enabling prediction of how changes to traffic might result in new damage, and evaluation of the effectiveness of current and alternative strengthening measures. It will be achieved via an ambitious programme, which includes (i) high-fidelity 3D numerical modelling of realistic viaducts, to explore the influence of a wide range of features on behaviour and (ii) detailed field measurement of the response of real viaducts to live loads for model validation.

Duties and responsibilities

You will carry out research programmes in computational structural mechanics and structural engineering, undertake project management and/or supervise multi-disciplinary teams and submit publications to refereed journals.

Your research will be undertaken within the project and is aimed at developing and validating advanced modelling strategies for realistic assessment of masonry viaducts, building on previous developments for detailed analysis of masonry structures and partitioned modelling within the CSM group at Imperial College.

Essential requirements

  • PhD in computational structural mechanics or a closely related discipline or equivalent experience.

  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals.

  • Knowledge of structural and computational mechanics.

  • Ability to develop and apply new concepts

  • Ability to prioritise own work in response to deadlines
